Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Total Summary Order?

i have a table that contains in each record the name of the customer and the dollar amount of that sale to the customer.

I want to list Customers by their Name and in another column the total dollar sales for that person(whether they bought one or many time)....and....have the report in order of Total dollar sales by person from Greatest total sales to lowest sales.

    Example:

    fred jones 500,000
    sam jones 495,000
    ed ableson 400,000
    bill vonages 50,000
    sam edwards 0

I can get a report listing each person and their total dollar sales, but can't figure out how to get the Report in order of Largest total sales to minimum total sales as in example. Will appreciate help.

    Re: Total Summary Order?

Bill, I don't think the report engine can sort your customers using a calculated field that gets computed separately for each customer. This seems like a case where you'll need to use a separate "temporary" table to support your report. Your script would:

    a) zap the temporary table
    b) compute the totals for each customer and enter a new "summary" record for each customer into the temporary table
    c) run the report (based on the temp table). That report can be easily sorted in descending order based on the sales totals.

The temp table is not really temporary. It just gets filled and emptied as needed for your report, so the values within it are temporary, if you see what I mean.

        Try this way.

Create a summarize operation. Group the rows by the name field then specify the sales field and choose sum.

Base your report on the result table.
        There can be only one.

            Re: Total Summary Order?

            Just another way...

Creating a group for the Customer_Name field and then sorting by a tablesum calculated field such as
            Code:
            invert(tablesum("Your_Customer_table", "Customer_Name=\""+Customer_Name+"\"","Dollar_Sales_field"))
will produce the desired results as well.

              Mike,

my Customer table is called Salestest2

i grouped the Customer names on a calculated field called pn which stands for personsname (which was simply trim(last_name)+","+" "+trim(first_name)

the Dollar sales field is called AC

i can't seem to get them inserted properly into your formula to get a calculated field to sort on. Will appreciate any help as your idea seems very good. Thank you.

                Re: Total Summary Order?

                Hi Bill,

I think Mike's code is based on the table having many entries of the same customer and a sales value for each of those entries.

Tom's suggestion and Stan's sample (which is the same thing) is the route I would also recommend.
                Regards

                  Mike,

After talking with you more and our working with your Formula you posted about the inverted tablesum, it turns out that the Report can be sorted by a calculated field which ended up as follows:

                  tablesum("salestest2","First_Name+Last_Name=\""+(First_Name+Last_Name)+"\"","Ac")

salestest2 is my table name, filter is customer name, and field containing the sales i wanted sumed was named Ac.

Turns out no inversion was necessary. My Group was based on person's name and the break was on the above calculated field in descending order.

Thanks again for the help and insight.

                  Bill

                    Just to clarify...
Turns out no inversion was necessary.
The invert() function was not necessary as Alpha has the radio button that does this for the tablesum() we added. Kinda wonder what happens when say Descending is chosen and the invert() is also used....will it then sort Ascending?? (gone now to check this out!). :)

LATER: :D Alpha is way too smart for us!! It did sort Ascending but it ALSO then eliminated the Invert() from the order expression and checked the Ascending radio button! LOL
                    Mike
