Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    on change function

I have a field called callstat, combo box, When user selects not interested, i want to write to a field. whatever the fields current value +1. The field that will hold the count is "noint" numeric.
So if "noint" is 5, and the user is calling the client again and still get no intrested, "noint" will have 1 added making it 6.

      Re: on change function

not sure how to make a field +1 i'm making a call list that when user enters not interested it adds the value of +1 to noint. So if current value of noint is 0 choosing not interested in the combo would change the value of noint +1 making the new value 1 and each time user reselects not intrested the +1 would then just add 1 to noint. It's just a counting field not sure how to set this up

I'm going to use on change with an if statement

        Re: on change function

        In pseudo code:

[ on change event script ]

        - get "text" property of the combo control
        - if it's "Not Interested" then
--- get the "text" property of the control displaying NoInt
        --- convert to numeric
        --- increment it
--- assign it back to the text property of the noInt control
        --- save the record
        -end the if code block

If the "text" property of the NoInt control is empty your script should assign a 1 to the control.

So should i just use a text field instead of a numeric field

            Re: on change function

Steve, there are lots of ways to do this. Would not surprise me if there's an easier (more efficient) way than I've described. My primary purpose in writing was to give you an outline you could begin to work with, rather than feed you a completed script. Exercise is good for us, right? -- tom

absolutly i've just been starting a little xbasic with this new db and finding i can make things work just how i want them to. I'm going to play today and see if i can make this work the steps are logical, now i just need to lay them out step by step and keep testing. thanks for the insite tom

                Steven,
If the field value will be involved in mathmatical functions, then it should be numeric. If you are just incrementing the value, then a character field works well with increment_value() function. The only caution is that if you might need to go backwards, say from 4 to 3, there is no immediate function for this for character and you would have to convert it to numeric, subtract, then convert back to character with str(val(fieldvalue)-1).

I was looking at the increment_value() function now i just need to play with it and see what i can make it do and how to use it.

                    Re: on change function

                    Steve,
Sorry. I get ahead of myself. There are three separate functions that I presented:
                    1- increment_value() ' increments a value (e.g. A->B or 1-> 2)
2- val() 'Changes the character value to numeric value ("4" -> 4)
3- str() 'Changes the numeric value to a character value (4 -> "4")

Look these up in the documentation for more parameters and broader understanding. They are good basic, mainstay functions to start with. Then begin to understand that you can string functions together to achieve an outcome, which is the one I ended with str(val(fieldvalue)-1), which
                    convert it to numeric, str(val(fieldvalue)-1),
                    subtract: str(val(fieldvalue)-1),
then convert back to character: str(val(fieldvalue)-1),

                      Re: on change function

                      Why not:
                      noint.value=noint.value+1

                      P.S.
Steve, please tell your workers, especially "Dewayne", to stop calling me about refinancing my mortgage. I am certainly noint X 50.
No offense, but I just don't have a mortgage to refinance.
