Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Syntax tablesum() function help

    I want to use the tablesum() function in an untraditional way. The third argument is typically the field name but I want the field name to be a variable that is defined by the user.

    i believe the syntax would be as follows but I can't get it to work. Is this even possible to achieve?

    Code:
    tablesum("tblrates","tblws_item->item_code=tblrates->item_code","'"+tblwksht->pay_rate_id+"'")
    I would use the case() function be there are 14 different cases which exceeds the limit of the case() function. Any other ideas if this doesn't work would be great. Thanks.

    Re: Syntax tablesum() function help

    Hi Lee,

    From the help file:
    Expression_2 ... Value_2
    through Expression_16 ... Value_16 Optional.
    One to fifteen additional different expressions that evaluate to .T. (TRUE) or .F. (FALSE) and the corresponding values that they return.
    So now you should be able to use the variable in your expression.

      Keith thank you for the quick response. I believe the case() function "blows up" because of a character limitation not the # of cases.

        Re: Syntax tablesum() function help

        Basically what I have is a set with the following structure

        Code:
        tblWorkSheet->tblworksheet_items
              |
              |
              ---->tblcustomer
                       |
                       |---->tblrates
        the rates table has the following fields

        customer ID (key)
        item code
        bill rate
        pay rate
        pay rate2
        subcontractor rate
        subcontractor rate 2

        the user want to be able to pay the employees by the items they install on a worksheet. He also wants to be able to vary that rate depending on the worksheet. A field on the worksheet table determines the pay rate to use for the worksheet. This is the field I want to be used in the tablesum function or a lookup function in a calculated field on the tblworksheet_items to determine the pay rate for each item added to the worksheet.

          First:
          The 16 dogs of case() is a myth.
          Second:
          Let me make sure I understand your question:
          You have a table that has a bunch of numeric fields.
          You want to calculate the sum total wherein the filter remains the same, but you want the field itself to be different based on a variable the value of which is supplied by the user. Correct?

            Hi Lee,

            I think you are missing the header table for the Set.

            Have a look at AlphaSports.

            Is there any one in your office?

              You got it. The logically way to get the rate given the customer and the item code would be to use a lookup() function...

              lookup("tblrates","tblrates->item_code = tblws_items->item_code .and. tblrates->cust_id = tblwksht->cust_id","'"+tblwksht->pay_rate_id+"'")

              and then to get the total for the items on the worksheet. Here is a picture to help maybe

                    I tried to call you but there was no answer.

                    Can you either email me your number or we can talk on Skype.

                    Main problem for you is that you have too many tables in your set for data entry.

                      Tried to create my own function to solve this problem. Here is the function

                      Code:
                      'Last Updated: 26-Mar-2009 04:25:10 PM

                      	vPR_id = alltrim(vPR_ID)
                      	vCustID = alltrim(vCustID)

                      	if vPR_ID = "pay_rate" then

                      	else if vPR_ID = "pay_rate2" then
                      	    Items_PR = lookup("tblrates","tblrates->item_code = val('"+vIC+"') .and.  tblrates->cust_id = '"+vCustID+"'","pay_rate2")

                      	else if vPR_ID = "Sub_rate4" then
                      		Items_PR = lookup("tblrates","tblrates->item_code = val('"+vIC+"') .and.  tblrates->cust_id = '"+vCustID+"'","sub_rate4")

                      	end if

                      	if vOT = .t. then

                      	end if
                      '	ui_msg_box("",str(Items_PR))
                      END FUNCTION

                      not working though. The function is called the field rules of a calculated field as follows.

                      Code:
                      ITEMS_PR(tblwksht->Pay_Rate_Id,tblproject->Cust_Id,TBLWS_ITEMS->ITEM_CODE,tblwksht->Ot)
                      OT = over time

                      The function just returns 0 and i tried to debug with pop up windows to see what the value of the arguments being passed to the function where and they are blank. The problem is passing the arguments because the function works fine if i manually enter values (i.e. items_pr("Pay_rate","COMC1",1200,.t.)

                        After a long day of looking at multiple screens full of so many numbers, my head is already hurting so I am not going to try to decipher this rather unusual design which led to a rather unusual question but in a way I am glad since it caused me to employ a rather unusual obscure alpha function.

                        So, the answer to your question is yes, you could subsitute the field name with a variable supplied by the user.

                        Let's say the variable you present the user with is called:fld_Name

                        tablesum("table_name","..your filter..",variable_name_normalize(fld_Name))

                        If you want to get fancy, you could present the user with a menu with the available fields to choose from.

I created a calculated field on the form with an identical function and that works perfectly, however the calculated field rule on the table only results in a value of 0.

                              I created a dummy table and triied my version of the function using variables in the interactive.

                              Code:
                              vic = 2
                              vcustid = "def"
                              vprid = "pay_rate"
                              ? Items_PR(vprid,vcustid,vic,.T.)
                              = 147
                              Example database attached. I left in a debug() statement that you can remove when you have seen the steps.

                              I may not be completely understanding the situation. Where are you trying to use this in field rules? Rules for another table?
