Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Thinking of upgrading from A5V5 to V9

    Hello!

I am considering upgrading from v5 to v9 and I was wondering if anybody has had any problems with the upgrade?

I don't have any web-based apps or anything that fancy, just simple database designs with lots of memo fields that I plan on breaking up in to many child tables instead of one big table like it is now. Also, in v5 I have noticed that the memo fields a re a bit unreliable, sadly, for what I am using them for, I can't use RTF. My other question is whether or not memo fields are more stable and reliable in v9.

THe main reason for the upgrade is that we are upgrading all the computers in the office to Vista, so I will be upgrading Alpha, and since I am upgrading, I will go with the newest version, I just wanted to get some feedback before I started messing with it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Jason, memo fields require special handling. Dr. Wayne's article on "Memos and Browses that Work" at www.learn alpha.com illustrates the best way to protect the integrity of your memo field data and minimize the potential for corruption.

There have been significant improvements in Action Scripting since vers 5. These are mentioned very often but I think they're well worth the price of the upgrade.

So why are you upgrading to Vista?

To echo Al's question, many, many companies (including many Fortune-500 companies) have rolled back Vista and reimplemented XP due to problems w. Vista. I'm sure the decision to go to Vista is a done deal. But as Al says, why?

Good article on memo fields, thanks!

As to the Vista upgrade, the boss has decided that's what he wants to do, and no one can persuade him not to. This is a small company run by a guy with a Napoleon complex, so every time we try to tell him why he shouldn't do something, backed up with many articles and/or empirical evidence, it just makes him dig his heels in more. Since I can't quit in this economy, at this time, I have to deal with it.

So, in short, we are upgrading because we were told to... <le sigh>

Believe me, if it was up to me, we wouldn't be, but since I have to deal with it, I am dealing with it. I figure if I get a new version to play with that should compensate for some of it :-)

Re: Thinking of upgrading from A5V5 to V9

            Jason,

I build networks on a daily basis. Occasionally, we run into a customer who insists on using Vista.

Most of these customers have purchased new PCs...usually Dell and like your boss refuse to believe that Vista is going to cause them problems.

I have spent countless days reformatting and loading XP Pro on supposedly "ready to use" Vista machines. Fortunately, I get paid by the hour to do this. Ultimately, the customer ends up paying hundreds of extra dollars per machine...oh well...live and learn.

The sad news is that we are quickly reaching the point where hardware manufacturers are not writing XP drivers for their newest products. This will eventually force us into living with Vista.

In the meantime, I would seriously consider quitting...lol

            Good Luck!

            Louis
