Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    field rule?

    I need to default a set of values in one table to the table which is currently being edited in add mode. I tried setting the fields in the record's OnChangeRecord event to the other table's fields but that messed up the whole record add process. I hope I am being clear. Many thanks for any assistance.

    Not at all.

    I need to default a set of values in one table to the table which is currently being edited in add mode.
    Forms and tables are entirely different things.

    I think you are saying that you are opening a form and want to default some values on the second form to the same values as seen on the current form? Why?

    If you are in add mode on one form, what is the purpose of opening a second form and defaulting values to values on the other form where the record has not yet been saved?

    It is possible to do this but the logic escapes me.

      Stan,
      I am wondering if what he is saying is that he wants to POST the values of fields in the table he is adding records to through a form to a second table and that is why he was trying to use the OnChangeRecord event. Just a guess (wild) on my part.

      Don,
      Is that what you are trying to accomplish?

        That is why I normally use the onsave on the form vs the field rule, because I have to use forms for my customers.

          Re: field rule?

          Sorry for the confusion. This is what i am trying to do:

          table 1 contains a group of fields. this is the "standard" list.
          table 2 contains an identical group of fields.

          i am adding through a form a record to table 2. i need to default the values in table 2 to the values in table 1, but only in add mode (when i first create a new record).

          I hope this is more clear. Thanks.

            There is only one record in table 1 holding the default value for each field in table 2?

            Do away with table 1. For each field in table 2 make a data entry default field rule, simple default expression, using the value currently stored in table 1.

              Re: field rule?

              Place this on the form OnSave event. When you save the record for table2, it will write the results to table1, as Ryland alluded to.

              Code:
              ' get pointer to current form's table
                 dim t2 as p
                 t2 =table.get("table2")

              ' open table1 for entry
                  dim t1 as p
                  t1=table.open("table1")
                  t1.enter_begin()
                  t1.field1 = t2.field1
                  t1.field2 = t2.field2
                  t1.field3 = t2.field3
                  t1.field4 = t2.field4
              ...and so on
                 t1.enter_end(.t.)
                 t1.close()

                Wouldn't that also trigger on edits as well as adds? Create a new record when another was being edited. Doesn't table 1 hold the values to be written to table 2? Looks like you're adding to table 1.

                  I read this, and still do read it as he is adding through a form to table 2 and from here he needs something to happen automatically to table 1.

                  Yes, you are correct, I missed that, so maybe better to frame the script with if end if to have it run only for enter mode:
                  Code:
                  if parentform.mode_get() = "enter"
                    >>> prior script <<<
                  end if
                  and put it in the CanSave form event instead of the OnSave event.
