Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field on browse problem

I have a set with 2 tables. Main table name Investments, child table Units_2.
The main table contains all my investments in the child table I list the weekly unit prices for the various Funds/Stocks. The linking keys are Fund_code for the parent table and Fund for the child table. The link type is one-to one and last matching record.
On the main table I have a calculated field (Current Val). The formula is UNITS*units_2->Unit_Val.
What is supposed to happen is that every time I enter a new current value in the Units_2 table , the Current Val in the Investments table should reflect the new value .
I am viewing the Investments on a form with embedded browse. If I add a calculated field on the form using the same formula (UNITS*units_2->Unit_Val) it works, but not on the browse.
    ?????

Re: Calculated field on browse problem

    Hi Gunter,

Your set you say, is linked as 1:1, in which case it could all be in one table.

As the calculated field is based on vales from the parent and child table it will not work in the browse the way you are expecting.

    Try Investments->UNITS*units_2->Unit_Val.

Re: Calculated field on browse problem

      Hello Keith,

changed the formula as per your suggestion - did not work. However , I found out that by changing the number of units in the investment table the calculated field updates to the right amount.
That give you any idea ???

Re: Calculated field on browse problem

        Gunter,
I created an example with what you described and was able to generate calculated fields without problem. I am not exactly certain if it corresponds to your setup exactly. I did have to add a OnSaveRecord field rule to add a corresponding child record for added parent investment records. I included a function that updates the current price based upon the investment symbol. This uses Yahoo Finance ( others are also available) and might not apply to your circumstance but exemplifies the capabilities to have investment values updated automatically.

        Hope it helps.

          Thank's Mike,

this does not give me what I want. Maybe I should explain some more. The "Units_2" table will contain weekly price entries for each of the Funds/Stocks. In other words , there will be about 50 entries in one year for each investment.
The "Current_Val" should show the value based on the last entry for each investment.

            Gunter,
The "Units_2" table will contain weekly price entries for each of the Funds/Stocks... there will be about 50 entries .....for each investment.
This is NOT a 1:1 link. If the single fund is the parent and the Unit_2 is the child, this is a 1:many link. If what you need is the current value based upon the last entry in the child record, then the attached should represent this scenario.

                Hi Mike,

I always enjoy looking at your code as there is so much to learn from.

I think there is a small error somewhere as the week counter, in Startup script, vcycle=vcycle+1 does not seem to be working.

Re: Calculated field on browse problem

                  Kieth,
The startup was just to get some data into the units2 tables as I don't like data entry type things. You are correct 'cause after I populated the table, I changed week field data type to "C"... so line 38 should be t.week = alltrim(str(vcycle)). Thanks kieth

This was just a quicky to attempt to show the calc fields. This has so many holes in the process that would need attending to. Like adding a new position... the weeks don't synch. I would not (and did not) set my own portfolio database with this structure. My own, BTW was greatly enhanced with your help with graphing scripts...thank you very much, Keith.

                    Gentlemen,

I want to thank you for your input.I took a different approach to this by attaching an update operation to the form events. So far it works fine.

                    Thank's Gunter
