Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5v9 free trial: it's Platinum, but we'll buy Standard: diffs?

A5v9 free trial: it's Platinum, but we'll buy Standard: diffs?

I'm working on my boss to get A5v9 Standard; at this time, we won't be doing anything fancy w/SQL, maybe nothing. The only SQL thing we might be doing is simple data imports (which I was told the Standard can do just fine). I am starting to create a small app using what I have here at home, A5v6. But I want to d/l the v9 Trial Ver, use the tiny bit I've done so far (not an app yet, just starting the database), and proceed w/v9, so I can have the 30 days to learn as I go. Then we'll buy whatever we need to use this app on 3-4 computers connected to a LAN.

But I'm worried that if I use this Platinum trial ver, then when we actually buy the Standard ver, what I did in Platinum may not be usable? Folks, I'm not an advanced user. [If something comes up that requires XBasic or even some little trick that's "simple" for most, e.g., I often have to seek help on these boards (and thank God for you guys!).]

I don't want to make a mistake here, because I'm actually planning first to upgrade my home copy of v6 to v9 out of my own pocket.

I'm sorry to have made a short question so long, but I didn't want to omit anything important. My curr ver of Alpha is about my 6th, having had as the 1st one Alpha Four v2; but my use has been intermittant, & my slight skills have lapsed. TIA for any info, and Hello to Selwyn, who used to know me as Randi from years ago.

Will d/l trial tomorrow if I get a go-ahead that it's okay for the situation.

Other that working with SQL back ends and Web... and the Unlimited Runtime I believe the two versions are the same. So... don't do anything with SQL while working in the trial and you should be fine. This is from A5...

"The main difference between these 2 Editions is that the Platinum Edition allows you to work with backend SQL data sources such as MySQL, SQL Server, and Oracle etc. for both Desktop and Web Applications, plus it allows you to take advantage of the Unlimited Distribution RunEngine License. The Standard Edition does NOT have this functionality and you are limited to only working with the built in Alpha Five database engine.

So, if you are going to be working with SQL data in any way, or wish to be able to deploy your desktop applications without any limitation, you will want the Platinum Edition."

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, David! Now I can d/l v9 without worrying about compatibility. I hope I'll be able to d/l the trial ver to both my home pc and to my laptop from work, so I can show my work to my boss as I progress. I feel sure Alpha will let me do that.

      I appreciate your helpful information.

Alpha allows you two installations per license for ONE user just as you plan on doing.

It wasn't hard to convince my boss to purchase we needed a database and i found alpha and within 20 minutes I had a basic understanding to show him it would more than do what we needed, and infact it did a great job

Carol, When it comes time to purchase, check out what specials are on at the time because there are some sweet deals quite often which should allow you to purchase the Platinum version along with the unlimited runtime for your users.

Thanks also to Mike, Steve, and Doug for more good information.

As for the Platinum with unlimited runtime for users, I have never had that kind of version before. I just wonder how difficult it is to set things up that way. I guess I need to search in Alpha's selection of available books I can buy that contain that subject. I need some new books, anyway; mine are from Alpha Five v4!
