Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copying forms, reports etc

For speed, in many previous apps, I have copied forms, reports, buttons etc between applications.

In version 9 this is no longer possible which makes development times rather slower.

I cannot always import the relevant tables etc from other applications as these may conflict with the existing tables in the current app.

Can this be resolved as it will lead to a lot of time lost if I have to recreate some screens, report etc from scratch?

This sounds like a wishlist item. Have you tried the utility offered in the code archive?

Not sure what you mean here. You can have multiple tables with the same name in the same database so long as they reside in different directories. IOW, add a table to your dabase, "copy to" the layout where desired, drop the table.
    There can be only one.

I just copied a form from one table to another table in another application with a5v9 Platinum 2095 3264

Are you copying from table to table or from set to set?

Can you provide more information about what isn't working for you?

I'm not doubting your experience, just trying to narrow down the circumstances.

        Scripts
I can still copy and paste the contents of one script in an app to a new script in another app in v9 so no problem there.

        Screens and Reports
Cannot copy and paste selections eg buttons, browses, tabs, field layout in report group header etc between apps

For example, I need to copy a complex report from an app written in v8 to a similar app in v9. The original report took half a day to create largely because of a lot of text so I do not want to take another half day to recreate it.

Before v9, I would open the original report or form in design mode, highlight all or selected elements and copy and paste to the equivalent in the new app.

I will try adding the tables from the source app as suggested then copying and pasting what I need then drop the tables. But before I do, does v9 change these tables and their associated libraries when adding them in? If so perhaps I had better make a copy of the original app first. Life was simpler with v8.

I dont know why you think that, I dont have any problem doing this task.

I do have some code to make life a little easier, if you would like to give me a call I will tell you how it works.

In a prior, fairly recent thread, I confirmed that v9 has lost this ability at least for buttons. Given time today, I will see if I can confirm some others.

You can copy reports and forms etc to a different application using the 'Copyto...' feature from the right click menu. When the dialog opens to choose a table or set scroll to the very bottom and choose <more...>. A standard windows file dialog will open where you can navigate to the folder containing the destination application. (don't forget the control at the bottom of this dialog where you can choose tables or sets)

                Tim, yep.

But the issue is that one no longer can copy/paste directly from one database to another now. This is for objects/fields. v9 to v9, v9 to v8, v8 to v9 all fail. v8 to v8, v8 to v5, v5 to v8, v5 to v5 all succeed.

Yeh, I realise that. (and should have mentioned that I did) Figured you had that covered with your confirmation and reference to previous threads. Just wanted to make easier the workaround of copying whole layouts.

                    Hello to all,

I had the same problem than John, and I did not know how to solve it. However, when I read the key word "Copy to" from Stan, I started to make research on this function. I found the response in the book of "Susan Hussey Bush", "Alpha Five Made Easy - The Basics and More for V9 Platinum", page 475. In her statement, Susan gives us good advices in case of problems. I finally solved my problem. Thank you very much to all of you for your assistance and thank you also to Susan.
