Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open a folder with variables

    i am trying to open just a folder without a prompt i want to open c:\filetest/addy
    addy is the variable that stores the address using addy=trim(shortsale.address.value)
    surely this can be done but can't put the code together correctly to do it

    Steve,

    What does

    i am trying to open just a folder without a prompt i want to open c:\filetest/addy
    mean to you?

    Do you want to prompt the user to select a file in a certain directory?

    ui_get_file()

    Example

    This script sets the default directory to "c:\documents" before opening the file selection dialog.

    dim defdir as C = "c:\documents"

    filename = ui_get_file("Select File", "", defdir +"\*.*")

    The items in red are variables.
    There can be only one.

      that isn't doing it i have 2 variables using it that way, defdir and addy
      defdir = c:\filestest\var->addy
      keep getting c:\filestest\ addy some reason i keep getting a space and then the script is useless.
      addy=alltrim(shortsale.address.value)

        what is shortsale?
        what is address?
        what is a sample value that might be stored in "value"?

        Are you trying to compute a single character string that contains both a constant ("C:\filetest\") and an additional term that is stored in a variable?

        Why aren't you concatenating the variable and the constant?

        What does "open a folder" mean? Do you want to run an instance of Windows Explorer and open a folder with it?

        I must be missing something...

          yes i want to use windows explorer to open a constant combined with a variable.
          shortsale is the table that contains field address
          i want to set a button that on put it gets address into a variable "addy" then to open windows explorer c:\filestest\addy
          each record that i have will have a folder that will store documents only for that record. I want to push the button and open the folder for the address
          example c:\filestest\1234 park st
          or c:\filestest\1234 drive st

            Steve,
            you are not being very clear. We can't tell what you have by how you have written it. You say you have two variables but you haven't detailed their values. Are you trying to concatenate 2 variables into an file address? Is this what you are trying to say:

            Code:
            defdir = "   c:\filestest\   "
            addy = "   1234 Lane Ave   "

            final = alltrim(defdir) + alltrim(addy)
            ? final = c:\filestest\1234 Lane Ave
            Try alltrim on both.

              Steven, I don't know how to "drive" windows explorer with Alpha Five, sorry.

              Your design will have a problem if you have records with duplicate street addresses. For example, it seems every Florida town has a 101 Main St. Duplication of street addresses is inevitable. If I were building an app that needed to store documents in separate folders for each customer or client, I'd use the client identifier as the folder name. Something that uniquely identifies my client, not its street address. The field value of the primary key in the client or customer table might be a much better choice.

                Steven,

                Maybe this will lead you somewhere.

                Code:
                root = "c:\\"
                folder = "temp\\"
                sys_explore(root+folder)
                There can be only one.

                  dim final as C
                  final = alltrim(defdir) + alltrim(addy)
                  if file.exists(final) then

                  end if
                  opens the correct folder everytime
