Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Which Action Script writes variable value back to another table?

An Action Script "Set variables to the value contained in one or more fields in a specified record in a table" makes it easy to retrieve the value of a field in a table other than the parent table of the form and place it the value in a variable.

Is there a way using Action Scripting to do the reverse?

To me this is fairly basic functionality that I am surprised Action Scripting doesn't cover -- but I hope I'm overlooking something.

tblParameter contains a record showing the value of the last record displayed in tblTopic. The purpose of this is to allow the user to pick up where he last left off, much like what TurboTax does when you can't complete your entire tax return in one setting.

I'm trying to discipline myself to rely on Action Scripting but don't see an action to write the value of a variable back to an unrelated table when the parent form closes.

    Bob,
Doesn't the Update operation do this if you choose the General tab of the genie and then use "Assign a Calculated value to a field" ?...you would then specify your variable when using the expression.

Are you looking for the Fields category, Set Field values?
      There can be only one.

Sorry to interrupt--but how do I make a thread? Embarrassingly I wish I could remain anonymous but can't believe I have forgotten how to do it.

I may have misunderstood. I thought the unrelated table was not open--if it is open then either use what Stan indicated or the Object Properties (Set and Get)-->Set properties of Object(s)

If the target table is supporting an open form (and the correct record is in view) you can assign values to objects in that form with action scripting, and then commit them to the table.

It seems by the use of the word "unrelated" that you may have something else in mind. I don't think action scripting can help you open a table (without opening a form), set the primary index required to do a find by key, fetch the correct record, verify that the fetch succeeded, trap the error if the fetch failed, then place the table in change mode, assign the new values to fields in that record, then commit the record to disk, and finally close the table.

That's an interesting philosophy which I started doing when I first started using Alpha.

But action scripting is not intended to be all encompassing, but is a good starting point...

So my philosophy has changed to using Action Scripting as a guide and helper and then writing functions for processes that have moved from test/play/experiment mode to production mode.

Most of this shift came from a side comment from Selwyn at a conference a few years ago which in summary was ' write functions '

In response to your question, look at action scripting - records - xbasic change record.

:D Now that Bob has up to 4 ways in Action Scripting to do what he wants, I doubt he will venture into xbasic anytime soon!

Stan, Can I ask which program you use for screen capture? The one I am using does screen capture OK and is free but does not seem to allow me to insert text like you did in the above example.

                    Thanks.

Thanks for the offer. I have gotten use to my current screen capture and as someone suggested in a private message I can easily use paint to add text and line drawing so I will give that a try for now.

In the 'Records' category I think 'Xbasic Enter Record' might do what you want.

Thanks to another vigilant member of this forum (who shall remain nameless but their initials are Mike C :p) for bringing to my attention that my suggestion was already made by Al in post 7. I guess great minds think alike don't they Al.

No problem. My thought was buried in the rant I had. Having people in the northern and southern hemisphere look at the same issue allows a view from top down and bottom up without having to rotate the idea..

And it's Mike C's job to watch my 6....... it keeps him busy....

Looking back - I thought I remembered which AS Bob referred to ( "Set variables to the value contained in one or more fields in a specified record in a table"), but now I'm not sure which one it is.. Do you see it? - if so send a picture - right side up please... ;)
