Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    field rules - conditional Lookup (No Drop List)

    I know this has been mentioned before. Conditional lookups are a very handy feature to have. However, IMO, there is a major shortcoming. Only browses can be used to lookup the value. When you try to create your own browse for the lookup, it's too narrow to display all the buttons across the top. I can find no way of editing that. I've tried opening the default browse in edit mode, saving it to a new name without making any changes. Still too narrow. In addition, this form of lookup looks VERY unprofessional. Is there a major issue involved in incorporating the drop list feature for conditional lookups???? How do you gurus get around this issue?
    Would really appreciate some response to this question.
    Ernie

    P.S. My situation: I have a field (simple lookup) with three values. Based on that value, the lookup will be for one of three tables.

    H Ernie,

    How many fields are your using in the lookup browse?

    Do you need all the buttons on the lookups?

      Re: field rules - conditional Lookup (No Drop List)

      Hi Keith,
      Only using one field. Here's the setup in the field rules. Another thing I've noticed is that the description field shows in the browse rather than the id field that is returned (as setup in the field rules), but the ID field shows in the form field after the selection and not the description field. I'm going to have to figure out another way to get this done.

        This is what I've come up with which seems to work fine. Created a Character field as well as the ID field for my table. I realize I could also just use a variable. Place this char field on the form as a combo, then in Choices, selected to use xBasic to fill.
        field OnArrive event:
        Code:
        dim t as p
        dim t1 as p
        dim t2 as p
        dim recs as n
        DIM pObj AS P
        dim vList as c
        select
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Livestock"
        		t = table.open("stock_classes")
        		t.index_primary_put("Stk_Class")
        		t.fetch_first()
        		recs = t.records_get()
        		for i = 1 to recs
        		    vList = vList + t.Stk_class + crlf()
        		    t.fetch_next()
        		next
        		pObj = topparent:item_name.this
        		pObj.settings.dynamic_list = vList
        		t.close()
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Product"
        		t1 = table.open("products")
        		t1.index_primary_put("Prod_Name")
        		t1.fetch_first()
        		recs = t1.records_get()
        		for i = 1 to recs
        		    vList = vList + t1.Prod_name + crlf()
        		    t1.fetch_next()
        		next
        		pObj = topparent:item_name.this
        		pObj.settings.dynamic_list = vList
        		t1.close()
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Asset"
        		t2 = table.open("assets")
        		t2.index_primary_put("Asset")
        		t2.fetch_first()
        		recs = t2.records_get()
        		for i = 1 to recs
        		    vList = vList + t2.Asset + crlf()
        		    t2.fetch_next()
        		next
        		pObj = topparent:item_name.this
        		pObj.settings.dynamic_list = vList
        		t2.close()
        end select
        field OnDepart event:
        Code:
        dim t as p
        dim t1 as p
        dim t2 as p
        select
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Livestock"
        		t = table.open("stock_classes")
        		t.index_primary_put("Stk_Class")
        		dim vItem as c
        		vItem = parentform:item_name.value
        		t.fetch_find(vItem)
        		parentform:item_id.value = t.Stkclassid
        		t.close()
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Product"
        		t1 = table.open("products")
        		t1.index_primary_put("Prod_Name")
        		dim vItem as c
        		vItem = parentform:item_name.value
        		t1.fetch_find(vItem)
        		parentform:item_id.value = t1.Product_id
        		t1.close()
            case parentform:type_product.value = "Asset"
        		t2 = table.open("assets")
        		t2.index_primary_put("Asset")
        		dim vItem as c
        		vItem = parentform:item_name.value
        		t2.fetch_find(vItem)
        		parentform:item_id.value = t2.Asset_id
        		t2.close()
        end select
        Would be open to any suggestions on a more efficient way of doing this.
