Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Adding MS Chart Features

After 3 plus years of trying to chart data with Alpha5 I am willing to share what little I have learned (obviously I am a slow learner).

I know that SimpleChartLite is included in Alpha5, but I soon found out that I wanted to do more that it can do. Also I was not sure that I wanted to buy the full version of SimpleChart knowing that I already had a free charting program since I use Microsoft Office. Hence I decided to see if I could use the full features of Microsoft Office Chart (in my case version 11.0).

The attached example highlights some of the features of MS charting that I have been able to use. I am now creating the desired charts directly in Alpha using the data manipulation features of Alpha.

I hope that someone finds these examples useful.

    Cheers

    Re: Adding MS Chart Features

    Truman,
Thank you for this. I have not but only glimpsed at it but seems to look better than SimpleChartLite.
I am curious if this can also be added to a report as well. I would say yes as it is just an ActiveX which is what SimpleChart uses.
Another quick question is whether MS Chart can create 3D graphics?

      Re: Adding MS Chart Features

Mike I don't really know the answer to your questions. I know that 3D affects that can be used with MS Chart is a Chart Area Properties. 3D properties can be enabled - but I don't know the exact coding. I think that anything that can be done with MS Chart in Access or Excel etc. can be programmed. Unfortunateily for me determineing the code take me some time for me to figure out.

Re reports, like you I assume that it should be the same as SimpleChartLite - but I haven't played with that. My approach has been to capture the chart as a picture jpeg, etc. and include it in reports - or more in my case in powerpoint presentations.

Please let me know if you learn more.

      Cheers
      Truman

        Hi Truman,

Thanks for posting your sample, unfortunately none of it works for me.
        Code:
        Script:OnInit line:67
        	c = Graph.Constants
        Property not found
        Graph.Constants subelement not found.

          Keith,
Maybe you don't have Office installed which in turn installs the activex required.

Possibly not Keith---I am using Office 2003. Easiest way is to add an activex object to a form and then check the list that is presented to see if you have MS chart to choose from....I have MS chart controls, MS chart10, and MS chart11.

Looks like I'm out of luck. I only have MS Chart 9.

Cant even find a download for it.

Apparently so. You have to work out the combination of settings for the series.

                    Try

                    c.chChartTypeLineoverlapped3d

for both. Screenshot attached. Also of ole automation browser where examples/constants can be found.

                      Keith,

You might try changing this line of the xdialog_2Axis_chart script.
                      Code:
                      Graph.class="owc11.chartspace"

Thanks Stan--now that I almost have all of SimpleChartLite automated inside of a function, maybe now will start a project for MS Chart!! (in my spare time, of course, which means sometime this year!...or next....)

                            Open the Ole Automation Browser.

With the Category set to All Objects and the Display set to Name, find Microsoft Office Chart ##.#, hilight it.

Switch Display to Programmatic Identifier. The result will be what you want, without the trailing ##.
