Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    iphone

I have an iphone and would love to be able to have database information on it. I have looked at ddh's HanDBase and after chatting with one of their techs the sync sounds pretty conveluted. It would probably work, but it's not an easy solution in my mind. anyone with experience in setting up HanDBase to sync to a a5v9 desktop database, chime in here....

I know Filemaker is not a good word to use around here ;-) but can I disregard the fmtouch for iphone? direct sync with fm on the desktop looks pretty nice.

I also understand that I could shift my desktop database and develope a web app which I would hope that an iPhone could use over the internet, but with the almost 1 billion downloads from the itunes store, how could I ignore the possibilities of having an iPhone application? is there a bigger market in the handheld arena?

What are people doing about an iPhone and databases? Is Alpha going to comeout with some form of communication for this device?
Are you getting asked to develope something that an iPhone can work with?

I would rather have a local application on a device than have a web app that I have to connect to because of speed, and consistency in use but would need to be able to sync with a desktop database.

Any comments would be appreciated before I sink more money into alpha for the webserver, or swap to another ship....

      Re: iphone

Thanks for the suggestion, I use logmein to support about 40 of my clients to their desktops and servers, I like it and it works great, I am really hoping for a solution that is iPhone based, not remote user based. If I had to sign into logmein 8 times a day that would drive me nuts because each login requires multiple password and user entries.

      Any other suggestions?

        Re: iphone

Biggest problem you have is that the iPhone marketplace is just too immature yet. And things get hindered from appearing because of Apples "approval" system. If you had a Windows Mobile phone then there are many suggestions to make. But so far, the iPhone has mostly attracted "consumer" type apps (mostly games) and so the development type systems have not grown yet. The best thing for you to do is to just keep checking Google for professional database development systems for the iPhone. There appears to be some the "are coming soon" so hopefully for you it won't be too much longer.

          Doug,

I'm interested in the same thing as the original poster, but from a Windows Mobile standpoint instead of iPhone. What apps do you suggest for Windows Mobile that work well with A5?

I have used Visual CE from Syware (www.syware.com) and found it to be an excellent tool. I think if you search on those names you will find posts from others who have used it as well.

              Hello Guys,

"I have an iphone and would love to be able to have database information on it. We deal in Windows 5, 6 + mobile apps for Businesses. We currently have over 1000 daily users transmitting orders from Smart Phones, PDA's and Tablet PCs, our customers say we should have done this before. Business Apps, we are coming out with an Iphone app for Businesses around the middle to end of 3rd quarter.

I checked out HanDBase and I believe you could use that DB and the desktop sync would be ok as the desktop database which you can connect via there ODBC to pull data into an Alpha5 app. However most of these setups have to many moving parts, But you can do it. Our new app is using the Iphone SDK and we are controlling the database in the Mac environment.

I would look at using email from IPhone and having Alpha pull in email and post through. Except for our Mobile apps (VB) all of our projects are now web (A5) based.

I found Database Viewer Plus on iTunes. Tried the Lite version for free, and liked it, but am not willing to spend $40 for the full version yet. Anybody find any cheaper option yet?
