Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Documentor has disappeared after re-install

Can anyone guess why Documentor appears hidden after it is reinstalled?

When I tried to reinstall, I received the following message:
    Code:
The Documentor for Alpha Five is already installed on your system.
It is highly recommended to uninstall the application before reinstalling.
Do you want to uninstall A5 Doc V6 the Documentor for Alpha Five
    before reinstalling?
    I answered yes.

The installation then proceeded smoothly with a message:
    Code:
    Uninstallation complete
    Some elements couldn't be removed
I checked the details and found that folders for A5Doc were not removed, so I did so manually. OK, at this point -- no signs of a A5Doc install

I reinstalled A5Doc again smoothly. I was a little surprised that it didn't ask for my key/password, but no errors were encountered.

When I open up my A5V9 application, and right mouse click on the control panel, all I see is
    Code:
    Addins>Calendars and toolboxes
What did I do wrong that the Documentor is not showing in the list of addins?

Re: Documentor has disappeared after re-install

    Bob,

The warning about uninstalling is there because I am pretty sure Astrum installer already has that boilerplate and I did not change it. There is no real need to uninstall. In fact, if you want to install to more than one version of Alpha simulteneously (some of us are weird like that), then you deffinately do not want to uninstall before installing to a different version.

As to why you don't see A5Doc show up - it would be because the install path is not correct. The installer probably suggests c:\program files\a5v6 as install location, but says to install to the alpha executable location. If this is for a5v9 and you are using default locations, just change location to c:\program files\a5v9 - or wherever the Alpha executable is. Do NOT add \A5Doc to the path.

    Bill.

      Bill,

      Thanks. Your suggestion worked.

      Just two suggestions going forward:

      1. The README documentation should specifying note that the add-in should be added in the same directory as the Alpha executable file. I know this now seems obvious, but I missed it.

      2. The documentation should also say to use the Documentor, you need to right click on the Control Panel area. Again, I don't remember reading this in any documentation saying this, and previously stumbled with Add-in manager, and was barking up the wrong tree.

Re: Documentor has disappeared after re-install

        Hi Bob,

For #1, A5Doc v6 was written for A5v6, but continues to work with A5v9. The install routine says
"INSTALLATION LOCATION: The following dialog should show the folder for the Alpha Five executable. If Alpha Five v6 has been run at least once, the default location will be correct. Otherwise, run Alpha Five v6 before proceding."
I admit that the install text does not emphasize strongly enough "folder for the Alpha Five executable", but I was thinking I might be selling a different A5Doc version for A5v7, v9, v11...

For #2, the 3rd line of the readme file says
"It is accessed by right clicking either inside a control panel tab, or on a control panel object such as a table..."

        Bill.

          Bill,

You are, of course, right on both counts.

But I managed to read past both points in my haste to get Documentor working.

Thanks again for such a nice utility.
