Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with Syntax

    This expression works well on its own
    Max(Tablesum("Tranzac","Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'"+".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)","Debit-Credit"),0)
    I am trying to use it inside a function where the parameter is "Field=Value" (Value to be replaced with the above expression). So this whole expression need to be wrapped with " ", and I tried hard to figure out how to modify it once wrapped with the " " but could not get it to work. I know that the " " turn into ' ' but when it gets more complicated I get lost. The final product should look something like this: "Field = Max(Tablesum ( ),0)"
    A hand would be much appreciated.

    Re: Help with Syntax

    Hi Gaby,

    How are you using the expression you have created? Would this be on a form or a report, or in a calculated field in field rules?

      Re: Help with Syntax

      Let's make sure we're on the right track.

      I am trying to use it inside a function where the parameter is "Field=Value"
      You are trying to use a function you have designed yourself? What are you trying to pass to the function? A filter? What does the function do?

      To pass

      Max(Tablesum("Tranzac","Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'"+".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)","Debit-Credit"),0)
      as a filter string, escape all the double quotes.

      "Max(Tablesum(\"Tranzac\",\"Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'\"+\".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)\",\"Debit-Credit\"),0)"
      And if you want to pass the assignment

      "field = \"Max(Tablesum(\"Tranzac\",\"Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'\"+\".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)\",\"Debit-Credit\"),0)\""

      There can be only one.

        Re: Help with Syntax

        The function it will be used in is Record_add() to create a record in a table and set the value of a field = to the value returned by the expression in question. It will be part of a script on a button.
        Thanks for the explanation Stan, I'll try to digest it and see how it goes.

          Re: Help with Syntax

          why is is not:
          t.fieldname = Max(Tablesum("Tranzac","Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'"+".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)","Debit-Credit"),0)
          if the script is adding directly to a table or
          topparent:fieldname.value = Max(Tablesum("Tranzac","Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'"+".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)","Debit-Credit"),0)
          if the value is being added to a form field?

          BTW..... "Debit-Credit" is a NO-NO for a field name.

          Field Names

          Start by entering a field Name, which can be up to 32 characters. The field name must start with a letter, and can contain the characters A-Z, 0-9, and the underscore character (_). If you use a space in the field name, Alpha Five inserts an underscore in place of the space.

            You would want

            RECORD_ADD("yourtablename,"yourfieldname = "+ Max(Tablesum("Tranzac","Tranzac->Accnbr>'4000'"+".AND. Tranzac->Date < Var->StartDate)","Debit-Credit"),0) )

              Yes Stan, works perfectly - many thanks.
