Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

I am in the process of transferring a data base from access to alpha 5.

I have tables for JobID,LayoutOption,Roomlist, fixturelist, fixtureadderlist all as 1to many relationships. in access i would store totals for all child fields in each table ie. roomlist would have a total cost field that stored the total of the fixture cost in related fixturelist fields. I did this at all levels because due to the number of calculations necessary to create reports and forms caused extreme delays in access and it got very tiring having to rewrite ever more complicated formulas at the higher table levels.

In alpha the calculated field seems to work very well for calculating totals of child tables one level down but seems tedious when calculating totals down 3-4 levels. especially when you need to do them again and again for multiple fields.

My main form is based on a set that includes all of the above tables and has browses for the roomlist and fixturelist tables i use the browse to select a view then have a parrallel subform to enter the data. I can trigger events in the subform to calculate and store the necessary data but i don't know how to trigger events in another subform. If i change quantity of an item in fixture list subform i need a way to trigger an event in the roomlist subform to ensure that the totals at that level are accurate.

    Can anyone help me?

Re: Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

    Hi Nathan,

I'm in the same process of coming from Access... I know what you mean about storing totals for reporting and not having to write the same code etc. Could you post your database, or a sample of it, and pick a specific example of what you'd like to see? That way we can develop a solution and post it back... working with real tables, forms, sets, etc. It's really helpful to have something to work with. Thanks.

I am still playing around with some of this especially layouts but the form in question is "Test form" on page 2 of the tab.

The tabs on the subfomr in the upper right "Energy detail" and "Pricing details" are based on the table room list and should total up from the fixture list browse below. I have tried putting a calculated field with an "oncahnge" event but that doesn't trigger when it recalculates only if you manually click on the field.

I see what you're trying to do, and it should be possible, but I'm not having much luck either. You have 2 sub-forms on the Test form... form2 seems to be syncronized, but form1 doesn't seem to be.

I haven't used sub-forms much yet, so I'm still playing. As you say, I can get a Total() function to work to get to the fixtures total, but not change, when the room changes, unless I click into it - which is odd. It doesn't matter if the total() for a calc field is on the sub-form or on the main form. Still looking.

Re: Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

          Nathan,

I've attached a copy of your database. In the Layouts_roomsummary form I've added a field to the Energy Details tab - top of the sub-form. This field shows the total of the Existing KW from the fixtures browse.

There's some odd behaviour that I can't figure out though. The layouts_roomsummary sub-form is not syncronized with the roomnames from browse1... yet the fixturepricing sub-form is.

The only way I can get Layouts_roomsummary to synch and show the Existing KW total is to edit a field on that sub-form - e.g. type in a room name description - or change the description. Then, the form is synched and the total shows. Maybe someone else can have a look and see what's wrong.

Something else... because of the flyover and flyoverleave events on the layout_roomsummary Roomexkw field - the field flickers when you put your cursor over it - is that what you want?

          Sorry I couldn't do more.

Re: Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

Thank you for the effort but this is still just a calculated field. I've got several of them already in place.. the question is how to i get the data to update to a regular field when your making changes outside of this subform.

Re: Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

I took a short look but do not know exactly what fields or calcs you are having issues with--it is NOT self-explanatory. Give me an example using actual names and amounts and where I can find them and what is showing and what you expect to have showing....and where the calcs are for said fields(field rules, form calcs, global calcs,....) and the names of said calcs.

That is if I am going to look at it any further....up to you. Maybe you already have it solved???

Re: Migrating from Access calucated field versus stored data

I was able to create some xbasic by copying a function and get the data to enter into the correct fields. however when i attach the code to the onrowchange event in browse2 on my "test form" the code works correctly but the browse is no longer correctly sinced to the form. if i remove the event trigger everything works again.

I also noticed that on the subform "form2" if iclick the second record in browse 2 the data shows correctly in form2 but if i try to make a change to the second record all of the chages occur in the first record. Not the currently displayed record.
