Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Anyone using an Epson AcuLaser C2800?

We have a customer who has been using our application for some time with no printer problems. But since purchasing a new Epson AcuLaser C2800 N can no longer print from within Alpha Five. The print preview appears as normal but when he tries to print it attempts to do so from the manual feed tray and says 'Out of Paper'. He can print from all his other applications such as word fine using the same defaults.

Obviously we've checked and tested all the printing defaults and preferences; which tray, A4 paper size etc and also downloaded the latest driver. Also spoke to Epson who could not help and said because it prints fine from other apps must be an Alpha problem.

Just wondering if anyone has this printer if they've experienced any similar problems?

    Cheers,

    Michael.

    Michael,

I have an Epson AcuLaser C1100, not the same but I guess is pretty much comparable to the C2800. I have no problem with printing but I recognize the problem you describe.

I assume that the appropriate Epson printer drivers are installed.

Is the C2800 the default printer under Windows?

The report that needs to be printed worked well on the old printer. Perhaps there are some specific settings under Alpha that relate to the old printer.

In the properties of a report there is a possibility to assign a specific printer and bin. Perhaps worthwhile checking out!

      Hi Jo,

Yes the correct Epson printer driver is installed and the printer is the default printer in Windows.

Good reasoning regarding the report properties...I checked that though and it is set to 'Use Default Printer'.

      Cheers,

      Michael

Re: Anyone using an Epson AcuLaser C2800?

When the customer prints from the print preview, is Alpha set to view the printer settings before printing? If not, I would do this and have him/her check the settings before printing.

          Robert,

No but from the print preview, they can go to File > Print Settings and choose their printer. Still the same result.

I would like to know more of how Alpha talks to the printer if anyone knows, do the printer's own drivers take over after the preview, or are there settings within Alpha?

            Michael,

I think what Robert was getting at is for you to set the options so that the printer settings do display so that you can see if there is anything that doesn't look right.

Is this happening on a Vista machine? If yes try running the application in administrator mode. (Right click the alpha desktop icon and select run as administrator)

Doug understood what I meant. If you go to Report Properties and select printer, there is a checkbox to set seeing the printer settings before you print.

I'm not sure what takes precedence. If you select your printer through the report properties or if you go to file\print setup? I have a report that prints on a #10 envelope. I can specify the envelope in the file\print setup but when I actually go to print out, the print settings are the printer default and I have to specify the envelope there. It's a HP. The latter example is why I suggested seeing the print setting before the actual printout.

Glen - The user is on an XP Machine.

Robert - I see what you mean. I'm not sure whether his report properties are set to show printer setup on print. I certainly checked all the printer properties out but that may have only been from File > Print Setup. I'll have a look on his machine later today and report back later.

                  Thanks,

                  Michael.

I just changed the report properties to show printer setup on print and had a look around in there before printing and everything seemed OK, I ensured paper type was A4 and tried all the different bin/tray options - still no luck.

The user just told me that they CAN actually print from A5 but the manual feed needs to be open with paper in it. If it is shut it still tries to print to the manual feed and says 'Paper Out'. Again, Word, test page etc print fine, automatically using the normal tray.

                      From the Alpha help-

You can set printer options (such as Printer name, number of copies, paper tray etc.) at run time, overriding any printer settings that are saved in the layout definition. To do this, use Action Scripting to create a script to print your Layout. [Picture].

I got to this from the help in the Report Properties Printer tab and selecting "set printer options at run time". I think this would solve your whole problem.
