Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Image + Bubble Help

    I would like to display an image upon rolling over a button. I have tested this and it works. However, my real objective is the image to be seen is the one for the current record changing each time I view to a new record on the form.

    I can get a single image to appear when I do this in the bubble help freeform

    {image=c:\media\pictures\temp\00001.jpg}

    thus identifyig the same image over and over for different records.

    Given I am not even close to competent with XBasic perhaps someone could show me the language. I think it would be something like

    {image=c:\media\pictures\alltrim(image_id)+.jpg}

    I surmise the part I am missing is how to write it so A5 recognizes it. Perhaps I need CHR92 throughout, some quotes here and there, etc.

    Thanks

    Just tried this on a browse using html where each record has an image reference field (photoimage) containing details of a photo id for that record. Worked a treat.

    <html>
    <head>
    </head>
    <body>
    {a5_HTML_extended_image_field_format("Photoimage","")}
    </body>
    </html>

      thanks Glen

      I am working on an application form versus the Web Server so I am not sure how the HTML will help on the bubble help. Also, how does the image reference aspect come into play on the bubble help and how does it point to individual imges that are disk stored?. Maybe I just don't have the experience to understand your advice.

        Bob

        The html gives the most flexibility to modify the bubble help. Alpha makes it very easy to add any fields from the current record through the properties option. If you have the image stored via an image reference field type then it will display the same as any other field.

        The attached image shows the bubble help window, note the "Fields DragDrop List"

          Ya got me on this one... where can I find info on a5_HTML_extended_image_field_format()? I've looked here, the help file, A5 web helpfile... can't find it? And... I can't get it to work, even hard coding an image path and name. Thanks.

            You are working on the desktop and not a web application?

                Bob

                In design mode right click on the field or column and select "properties"

                Select the "help entry" tab

                then click the edit button next to the bubble help text box.

                select the "Use HTML" radio button and in the window below some html coding will appear.

                Place the cursor in the blank line between the <body> and </body> tags

                Click the "Fields DragDrop List" button and then drag the correct field into the window. Alpha will enter the correct code.

                That should be it.

                  And so it does... yikes... how do you find out about this stuff? Pretty cool... thanks Glen.

                  Does it have to be an Image Ref Field? Could I supply just a full path and name to an image?

                    Re: Image + Bubble Help

                    Glad it worked :-)

                    You could put in the full path but that is what is stored in the image file reference field.

                      Yes... I was just thinking that... I use the Image Ref field a lot, but never in browses or forms that I actually work with... I just use text fields and use code to set the Image Ref field. It's a great field but bring my forms and browses to a crawl.

                      But, it's the only type of field that will behave itself for images on reports.

                        How large are the image files? The ones I use are fairly small (passport size photos) AND are stored in a folder beneath the database folder. I don't experience any speed issues.

                          Image size is between 400k and 600k... some are 40k If I have just 2 records in the table - each image at 40k - then the movement between records is fine... as you'd expect - very quick. Then I add a 3rd, 4th, and 5th record at 600k each. Moving between records now takes 4-5 seconds. Even moving between the 1st 2 records (40k each) takes 4-5 seconds.

                            Glen, let me guess, the HTML option is first available in Ver 9 and not in Ver 8?

                            I am still using Ver 8 and cannot find the radio button on the help entry screen
