Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to trigger an event on a field in a form

I have a form with just a few fields on it, and when I change data on one field I need to trigger the onchange (EG:, or any other)event in another field.
I am struggling to find the right code to do this, is this something that can
    be done?

    Regards

I do believe that events like the OnChange are triggered by user entries, not by code/script. What is it specifically that you wish to accomplish in the end? Am betting that it can be done....and most likely in more than one way.

A forms events are covered here. If you don't find a form event that handles changes to all objects (I didn't) you will have to work with the next lower level (field onchange events).
      There can be only one.

        Hi,

change to the design mode, right click on the field, select the event-> OnChange (ungoup the object if necessary).

Action script command 'Set Field values' can be used to operate on several fields of the view. You can change the value of any field of the view, by perdefined value or variable or expression.

I don't know exactly what you want to do, but I prefer field rules for field calculation.

          Thanks Everyone.

It sounds like you can not trigger the field events with code,
I guess I was hoping it was similar to foxpro, whereas you can
simulate the actions of the events and methods.

I will do a work around.

            Craig,

Not trying to stretch this discussion out, but how can you trigger an event? The code that you are wanting to run to do this itself would need to be triggered by and event (button click, timer event, etc.). So I am thinking that there is some misunderstanding of terminology occurring here. It is very easy to "simulate" the call of an event, I'm just not sure what it is that you have in your mind. Can you tell us how the code is going to be initiated that would try to call an event?

Re: How to trigger an event on a field in a form

I am just starting to write code in Alpha5 and I guess I am trying to accomplish similar things that I have done with Visual FoxPro, Such as triggering code that is embedded in the event
like dblclick, click, gotfocus, lostfocus etc, by issuing a command like <object>.dblclick() called from any where within the session.
After writing code with Dbase, Foxpro, SCOFoxpro, Visual FoxPro
and some Clipper starting in 1978 it is hard to grasp the difference as my brain is programmed.

              Thanks For All Your Help

Probably just a difference in design.

dblclick - only applies in a browse. Not sure how that event could be triggered other than the actual user action.

click - for a button you can buttonobjectname.push()
click - for a field you can fieldobjectname.activate()

                gotfocus - same as click?

                lostfocus - activate something else
                There can be only one.
