Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Previous Value

I am trying to create a calculated field in a browse which will look at the previous record (the browse is queried by combo boxes for month and year) in order to figure out how many hours have elapsed between the end of the previous record and the start of the current record. I started to do this with a calculated field for the browse using the Previous function but it seems to be giving me what is in the current record. Any ideas how to do this?

    Re: Previous Value

    John,
Just a quick reply. Previous(), when using in a set, will only work on the parent table, not on child tables. Will look more into how to accomplish this as I've spent many an hour trying the same. I'm sure someone will come up with a solution.

      Re: Previous Value

I attempted a few times to edit the form/browse but corrupted the table/form each time---got tired of restoring db. For me I would need a different sample with a simple numeric calc field---and not placed in the browse yet as that was the problem for me---Alpha got confused and could not determine the field type which in turn corrupted the form.

Maybe others will have better luck with this sample.

        Re: Previous Value

John, I'm curious about a couple of things:

        a) if the time on duty will ever exceed 24 hours your formula won't work cause there's no "date" component for the duty_off field. Why not use TIME values for both duty_on and then duty_off. A simple substraction will give you the number of seconds that lapse regardless of the number of days that might have passed.

        b) it seems your Duty_time calc is returning the wrong value for LRS on May 2. Shouldn't the field value be 2.8 instead of 3.8?

          Re: Previous Value

          Dear Tom,

Yes the time will not go over 24 hours but can go over midnight. I was trying to keep the data entry simple as a Time field seemed like over kill. I was hoping that with a previous function I could look at previous record and date and if it went over midnight then I would just add one day to the date then compare it with the current record to determine the amount of time that has passed. It seems the current problem is the previous() function does not work for the child records and I am looking for a work around.

I am attaching a new sample with no calc field and hopefully this is not corrupted.

15:30 to 19:20 is 3.8 unless I am so punchy because of the time.

3.8 it is. My mistake. My military time recognition is a bit rusty. Sorry.

              Re: Previous Value

              From the help file:

Note : If you are working with a set, PREVIOUS() returns field values only from the previous record in the primary table.

I'm no expert and there is probably a better way to do this, but this is the choice I started with. I've attached my example.

I added a button "Duty Rest" to the form which runs a script. I'm using xbasic to do your calculation. This script is not finished, but I have to leave for now.

                Re: Previous Value

I appreciate the calculation, and I understand this. I wish there was a way to create a calculated field in the browse. Is there a way to do the recno -1 or some way to create a line number in the child table that could be referenced. Thanks in advance.

                  Re: Previous Value

                  John,
Create a calculated field and then from the drag-drop list drag it to the browse in design mode and drop it.

Don't use the record number to create line numbers....too inconsistent and will change when a record is deleted---no order maintained IOW. There are many threads on numbering browse rows...and several methods as well.
