Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error During Load v9

I have a small app that I created an install package on version 9 (Current Build). From the install Setup.exe I installed my app on Windows 2000, an XP and a Vista machine. It installed fine and the app runs fine on the XP and Windows 2000 machine, but when I install my app on the Vista machine, my setup.exe installs fine with no errors from Alpha, but then Windows gives me an error that the install may not have completed. When I startup my app on the Vista, I get the following error, however, the app runs fine.

    Error During Load

Error running addin "Startup_100_Register_Controls': Could not open OLE object
'{80C2583C- and whole series of digits and letters}'

I have searched through threads here. I found some old threads from v7 and v8 saying to download latest patch. I did find a post where it suggested to register and few dlls. I did that and I still get the message. Why am I getting this message and why is it only on the Vista machine, which is the one that my end user is using. I told him for now to ignore the message, but it is a nuisance. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

Error running addin "Startup_100_Register_Controls': Could not open OLE object
'{80C2583C- and whole series of digits and letters}'
I do not profess to know the answer, I wish I did, but it is my understanding that the first time that you run Alpha V9 Runtime on a machine then various .dlls are registered. If you subsequently delete the folder containing the .dlls then Windows is still looking for the dll in the original location.

I can repeat your problem if I first rename as OLD then delete the original Runtime to the recycle bin then re-load with a NEW Runtime. I then get the same annoying error as you. Now if I restore the renamed OLD folder so that I have two Runtimes then start up will run without the error even though I am using the NEW engine.

With Vista right clicking the shortcut and choosing 'Run as Administrator' sometimes works but not always.

I wish someone with the knowhow could explain this better than me and tell us which .dll we need to re-register when this happens. It is easy to cure on your own PC, you can download another patch, but it gets tricky if trying to do this on a clients PC.

Yes Al I did look at that thread and several others, but to no avail. There is obviously a dll(s) that is not registered and needs to be. Do all the Alpha dlls in my client's Vista machine have to be registered? I don't understand why Alpha can't convey what dlls need to be registered and why didn't their install software register them. It only happens on a Vista machine.

Elwin, as is noted from time to time this message board is not closely monitored by Alpha staff. It's a peer supported forum, where users help users, for the most part. I can think of 3 options for you: (a) submit a formal bug report with a sample of your install exe and a very detailed explanation of what you are experiencing. The actual error message you get back would be helpful, for example; (b) contact tech support at Alpha, pay their fee, and get one on one help; or (c) attempt to deploy your app to a Vista machine using a third party installer.
