Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Adding records to an embedded browse

I have a form with 2 embedded browse controls. The first is for the parent table in the set, and the 2nd for a child table. As I move through the records in the parent table, the browse for the child table correctly lists the associated records.

My problem is........when I attempt to add a record in the browse for the child table, I'm getting a message that a field is required. This is the field that links the 2 tables in the set. I can't add this field to the browse. Why isn't the browse for the child table automatically retrieving the value of this field from the current record in the parent's table browse? There doesn't seem to be an event that allows me to set this value in code. Please tell me where I am going wrong.

    Thanks,
    Bob A.

    Very odd.

Tell us about the linkage arrangements between the parent table and the child table.

Confirm that the form itself is actually based on the set.

Have you by chance specified that the child table link field is "required" in the validation section of field rules for the child table ? If so, it's unnecessary and the "required" field rule should be deleted.

Do you have a record in the parent browse selected when you do this? I'm not sure you can but otherwise there is no way for Alpha to know which parent record to which to attach the child. Can you put the linking parent field on the form as well? Even if it is hidden it should give the child linking field a value to use.
      There can be only one.

Re: Adding records to an embedded browse

The parent and child tables are linked by the record id from the parent table. Yes the form is based on a set. I have a record selected in the browse for the parent table. I did have a field rule for the child table that required this field to be entered. I removed that field rule. Now I cannot add a record. I don't get the message I did before, but I can't add records at all.

        Thanks.

Re: Adding records to an embedded browse

I checked the child table and found that records are being added. But the field that links this table to the parent has no value; therefore, these records won't show up in the browse.

Re: Adding records to an embedded browse

I solved the problem. Apparently you can't define a lookup in the field rules in my scenario. After I removed that field rule the browse is adding records and assigning the corrrect value to the linked field.

Thanks Tom for pointing me in that direction.

Re: Adding records to an embedded browse

Robert, for future reference here's a tip on how to begin a troubleshooting session like this one.

Compare the behavior of your custom data entry form with that of Alpha's "default form" for the set. If the behavior is the same in both forms then the trouble probably lies in field rules. Otherwise, if the default form's behavior is "correct" and "different" from the custom form, the problem likely will be found within the custom form.
