Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Working on designing Letter then error and letter disappears from control panel?

So I have been working on a letter design for almost 2 hours and always saving when I make a change. Suddenly I save a change and get the following error:

    Internal Error Store Create

Nothing else. I try to save again same error. Have to close the letter editor and now the icon in the for the letter in the control panel is gone! I can't retrieve any of my work. This is very frustrating!

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I do a ton of letter and report developing and I have never seen that error. But if I did, I would first exit A5, come back in and reopen the database, compact it and see if the layout is there. If not, I would exit again, reboot and try it once more before screaming bloody murder. Also it is also possible (maybe probable) that you were trying to do something unusual in the layout that A5 just wasn't designed to deal with. If so maybe you need to tell us what that might have been.

Tried all the exiting, compacting, and rebooting. Nothing.

At the time it happened I had just added a small bitmap to the layout. Tried to save and bam the error. That was the second bitmap in the whole layout. I had about 5 RTF areas and 3 page breaks in the layout.

As far as I can tell I was not trying to push any limits or use anything that is not presented as being usable in a letter layout.

Trying now to determine what Alpha5 file stores the letter. In the project directory the file with the .FPT extension is quite large at just over 1 GB so disproportionately large compared with the other files in the project but as I understand it this is just related to the memo field in the table.

The .DDM file is ~800 kb and the rest of the Data Dictionary files are all 3kb or less.

Is there a size limit on that .DDM file?

Re: Working on designing Letter then error and letter disappears from control panel?

Tried to find the letter location using

        ? a5.Letter_Location("individual_ltr")

in the active window and only returned

        = ""

So that tells me it no longer exists in the data dictionary at least by the last name I saved it as. It was wiped out.

I'll give it a try again Friday but will be screaming bloody hell I lose another 2 hours of work.

Try the duplicate table (or set) option of the right click from the control panel of the table or set. Make a new name

It is the magic elixir of fixers for structure problems with tables/sets.

Choose all options - data - rules - etc. If it then works in the duplicated, then delete the old one and rename...

Hey Thanks for that tip. I was very excited but unfortunately it did not recover the letter. It did duplicate some reports I have so it sure looked like it could work. Might have been the result of the fact that I compacted the database a couple times to try and cure the problem before your tip which may have cleaned out the corrupted trash. Darn!

Thanks again, I know this will be useful in the future. I have had web components disappear mysteriously in A5V8 and this may be the ticket to getting them if that happens again in A5V9.

            Best,

            Chuck

Web component storage is completely different.
