Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Data in Paragraph Form

    I have a database that will generate students who have qualified for the honor roll. The application will generate a report listing the students at each honor roll level and by grade.

    1 HIGHEST HONORS
    Grade: 9
    Dionne, Natalie
    Fink, Katelyn
    Ledue, Natalie
    Livingston, Stacy
    Mai, Mimi
    Miles, Jordan
    Rumrill, Angela
    Stackpole, Olivia
    Total for Grade 8 = 8
    TOTAL COUNT FOR HONOR ROLL LEVEL 1 = 63

    I send this to the local newspaper as a Word RTF file. The paper rather have the names in a paragraph rather than a list as follows

    1 HIGHEST HONORS
    Grade: 9
    Dionne, Natalie, Fink, Katelyn, Ledue, Natalie, Livingston, Stacy, Mai, Mimi, Miles, Jordan, Rumrill, Angela, Stackpole, Olivia

    Anyone have an idea how this could be accomplished in a report?

    Thanks,

    Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

    Seeing the data gets us about halfway to how it is stored.

    Dionne, Natalie
    Fink, Katelyn
    Ledue, Natalie
    Livingston, Stacy
    Mai, Mimi
    Miles, Jordan
    Rumrill, Angela
    Stackpole, Olivia
    These liines are separate records? One field for the name or last and first name fields.

    Grade: 9
    This is the group header for the report?

    I think you can use table.external_record_content_get() to get the list of names if you can define the same filter for the function as is used in the report. Then use strtran() to change the crlf() in the result. I would suggest ";" instead of a comma to make it more readable.
    There can be only one.

      The data is stored as a separate field for last and first name, along with a field listing the honor roll level and grade level.

        Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

        You could generate a comma delimited list as a global variable and place the variable on the report. Generate the list using table.external_record_content_get() and convert it from crlf() delimited to comma delimited using crlf_to_comma() function.

            Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure I understand where I am creating this this calculated field. When I placed your code in a calculated field it says it is incomplete. See screen shot.

                  I missed a parenthesis.

                  Code:
                  strtran(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","hrlevel ="+hrlevel +"grade = "+quote(grade)),crlf(),";")
                  The calculated field should be placed in the group header or footer once it is defined. the detail section can be eliminated.

                    Stan, still getting the same error. Mike I got yours to work when placing the calculated field in the report, but it does a strange thing on page 2 of the report and doesn't list names for some of the grade levels. I have attached the report as a PDF. Any ideas?

                    I set up the properties for the field to be 1500 width with wrap around/

                      David,
                      run the function in the Interactive Window with variables for the filter expression and see how it resolves there.

                      Stan,
                      Don't you not need the order expression parameter in table.external_record_content_get() function in place to have the filter recognized? And least me be asking you about filter syntax, but are you sure that filter syntax is correct?

                        Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

                        Does work better with the order parameter.

                        Code:
                        strtran(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","lastname","hrlevel ="+hrlevel+"grade = "+quote(grade)),crlf(),";")
                        Wonder why my test didn't throw an error? - Well, I guess the funtion was interpreting my filter as an order expression. Unusual to specify the order first. Most thngs want the filter first.

                        Code:
                         :Object_Type.PREVIEW( Layout_Name as C [, [COLOR="red"]Filter_Expression as C[/COLOR] [, Order_Expression as C...............

                          I have tried to figure why the expression doesn't work for all values. This is what is in the report:

                          strtran(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","","hrlevel ="+hrlevel+ " .and. grade = "+quote(grade)),crlf(),"; ")

                          I still get messed up reports for HR Level 2 and Grade 10, 11 and 12. See previous attachment. Any ideas?

                            Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

                            New discovery...

                            In interactive window, when I set the variables for all the lists that work and then run the function:

                            ?strtran(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","","hrlevel ="+hrlevel+ " .and. grade = "+quote(grade)),crlf(),"; ")

                            The results will be in "gray" as follows...

                            = "Archambault, Jacquelyn; Arsenault, Elizabeth; Arsenault, Leanne; Beaudoin, Tyler; Belanger, Nicole;

                            Note there is a quote " at the beginning and end of list.

                            When I change the variables to the grade 10, 11, or 12 at HR Level 2, the resulting lists are in black as follows:

                            = Anatra, Jonathan; Armitage, Jennie; Beaudoin, Shaina; Bellows, Spencer; Benoit, David; Black, Samuel; Bordeau, Nicole; Bourre, Olivia;

                            **The reulting list does not have a quote " mark at the beginning of the list.

                            Does this help?

                              Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

                              What would help is a sample database that illustrates the problem.

                              My testing with AlphaSports yields

                              Code:
                              ? strtran(table.external_record_content_get("customer","alltrim(lastname) +','+alltrim(firstname)","","customer_id < '00000010'"),crlf(),"; ")
                              = "Graham,Michael; Peabody,Sally; Rebo,Janet; Mesner,David; Feld,Evan; Rigan,Jason; Mederos,Lee Ann; Cario,Jennifer; McMiggan,Thomas"
                              There should not be a trailing semicolon created by the expression and it should be quoted.

                              Not having the leading quote mark and with having the trailing semicolon leads me to believe that there is some entity after the last semicolon that is forcing the automatic type conversion for character to blob. Strike the part in red. The interactive seems to display long strings differently.

                              Code:
                              mystring = replicate("Graham,Michael; Peabody,Sally; Rebo,Janet; Mesner,David; Feld,Evan; Rigan,Jason; Mederos,Lee Ann; Cario,Jennifer; McMiggan,Thomas",5)
