Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to get the index name

    Hi,

    I have looked here in the message board and tried a few different ways to
    get the name of the index that is opened with a form based on 1 table.
    That is if it defaults to having one when it opens the form.

    I am trying to store the name to a variable so that I can change the order
    then revert back to the one that was in effect when the form was opened.

    Is there any one that could give an example.

    Thank in advance

    Craig C. Hudson Sr.

    Re: How to get the index name

    The Help file is your friend. Under "Table Index Methods" you will find "<tbl>.Index_Primary_Get()" with an example pretty much as follows:

    Code:
    dim tbl as P
    tbl = table.current()
    index_pointer = tbl.index_primary_get()
    index_name = index_pointer.name_get()
    msgbox(index_name)
    Then look at <tbl>.Index_Primary_Put()

      Stan,

      I tried the exact same code but kept getting a blank index name.
      I suspect I am tring the code in the wrong place (form init or fetch or activate), or the form does not open with an index open.
      Except that it seems to be in some order.
      The table has 8 indices, one of which is unique.

      This is the code in the init event of the form:

      dim shared tbl_chkdata as p
      tbl_chkdata = table.current()

      dim index_pointer as P
      index_pointer = tbl_chkdata.index_primary_get()
      index_name = index_pointer.name_get()
      msgbox(index_name)
      'this returns a blank msgbox

      tbl_chkdata.fetch_last()
      lasttransdte = tbl_chkdata.dtetrans
      LastBatch = tbl_chkdata.batchno
      LastStmtMo = tbl_chkdata.stmtmonth
      LastStmtYr = tbl_chkdata.stmtyear
      tbl_chkdata.fetch_first()
      end

      Regards

        Stan??

        Anyway, getting a blank just means it is record number order.

        PS., Actually, Stan is the smarter one, so try not to get us confused.

          Sorry Raymond,

          I was looking at another msg, been a long day so far.

          So it seems that by default the form does not open up with any
          index, I thought I read in the help file that it would use the primary
          index.

          Mainly this exercise was for future reference when you need to switch
          indices back and forth and did not know which was the curent one.

          Thanks Ray

            Re: How to get the index name

            I don't think you need to change any indexes to do what you want.

            Code:
            dim shared tbl_chkdata as p
            tbl_chkdata = table.current()
            name_chkdata = tbl_chkdata.NAME_REAL_GET()
            original_record = tbl_chkdata.recno()
            original_reccount = a5_get_records_in_query(name_chkdata)
            tbl_chkdata.fetch_goto(original_reccount)

            lasttransdte = tbl_chkdata.dtetrans
            LastBatch = tbl_chkdata.batchno
            LastStmtMo = tbl_chkdata.stmtmonth
            LastStmtYr = tbl_chkdata.stmtyear
            tbl.fetch_goto(original_record)
            There can be only one.

                Stan,

                Good example using recno.
                I was trying to use the index switching method for future needs,
                such as when there is an index in effect and you do not know which
                one is.

                Thanks to all,
                Craig

                  Re: How to get the index name

                  Index switching doesn't require that you know the index name.

                  Code:
                  dim shared tbl_chkdata as p
                  tbl_chkdata = table.current()

                  dim index_pointer as P
                  index_pointer = tbl_chkdata.index_primary_get()
                  tbl_chkdata.index_primary_put() 'switch to recno()

                  tbl_chkdata.fetch_last()
                  lasttransdte = tbl_chkdata.dtetrans
                  LastBatch = tbl_chkdata.batchno
                  LastStmtMo = tbl_chkdata.stmtmonth
                  LastStmtYr = tbl_chkdata.stmtyear
                  tbl_chkdata.fetch_first()
                  tbl_chkdata.index_primary_put(index_pointer) 'switch back to the original
                  end
                  There can be only one.
