Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dashboard Development

I have a application that I am trying to develop a dashboard to give the user a summary of key components in one form. The data is going to be pulled from a variety of differnet databases. The problem that I have run into is there seems to be no easy way to accomplish this is A5v9. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. Any direction or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jeff,

Check the bottom of the page and you will find some related links that might help. You would also find those links if you do a search on Dashboard.

      Re: Dashboard Development

Jeff, I tried to do this via alpha's pie charts last year, but it got too complex for me. I have attached part of a screen that a friend of mine wrote - outside Alpha.

I think the key is, as you will know, but some others will not necessarily appreciate, is that (a)the bars etc are constantly changing in proportion with the number of relevant records, and (b) more importantly, clicking in any part of any bar, drills straight into those records - so the bars serve as menu's. I was able to place a button in my Alpha bar chart, but not one that morphed to the size of the bar. It's also benefical to have multiple tables and datasets summarised in one dashboard view.

So forgive me that I can't help; I've just tried to throw some light on what we are looking to do.

        Larry,

I posted a link as well a while ago trying to find others with some Business Objects and Dashboards. I looked at your attachments. Where can I find some more info on how you accomplished them.

        Thanks,

        Ryland

          Thanks Larry....

Your example is exactly what I am trying to accomplish. Any light you can shed on how you accomplished this would be appreciated.

Also your analysis of the need (changing as records change) is right on the mark.

            Larry,
            Am curious...

I am not at all clear on this. What sort of records will come up when clicking on a bar? Just the figures of the summary....details of ALL the data that was used in creating the Bar...??

Could you give a screenshot of the drill-down?
            Mike

              Mike,

I think it is to show the records that make up that particular bar on the chart.

For example you may have bar chart displaying outstanding debtors. One bar for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, etc. If you click on the 60 days bar then the records pertaining to that would be displayed. Whether this is as a form or report I guess is application and subject specific.

That's my interpretation of it anyway.

Yes Geoff, you are quite correct. In my case, clicking on any part of any bar then opens a browse containing all the relevant records that make up the total within that specific bar colour.

These 'Dashboards' are particularly useful at providing a very visual summary of your data, and especially at providing warnings when 'Actions' become due/overdue, i.e. moving from green to amber to red. You can easily monitor multiple tables on one screen. Obviously you can have browse rows changing colour in Alpha, but not to summarize an entire table(s).

For the record, my colleague writes his Dashboards via .net, but unlike me, he is a professional! He calls it 'Management by Exception'.
