Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Run application in full screen only

    Hello,

    I'm building a small application in which i want a main form to appear in full screen. No system menus, status bar and so on (I want it to look and behave as an IDE as much as possible).

    So far i have created a main menu form that automatically starts in full screen when i open the application. So far so good.

    On that form several buttons open other forms (windowed).
    When that happens , the original main menu (which i want to stay open) goes to windowed mode.

    Is there a way to keep the main menu full screen at all times, and open windowed forms , or does it have to be all full screen, or all windowed ?

    Not sure if i'm very clear about what i need but thanks for any input.

    Hi Jean-Pierre

    You can set up the database to run in "SDI" mode "Single Document Interface"

    This can be turned on via the database properties menu, select a startup form, select "maximise the form" and from the option that appears then turn off Min/Max/Restore/System buttons on menus.

    Regards

      Hi Jean-Pierre

      What I did was for my main screen was to not set it to maximized but instead under the forms properties set the size height and width to 99 percent. Then after the form is loaded but hidden by the autoexec script I tweak the forms height and width to maximize the real estate. I also recalculate the left and top positions for certain objects on the form so that are centered regardless of the size of the form. then I finally display the form. Also when I load various forms I have them centered on the screen with my main screen and menu always in the background.

        Hi Jean-Pierre,

        It may also be worth looking up wallpaper in the Alpha 5 help.

          The short answer is NO.

          The wallpaper method may work for you but note that even that is not a maximized form.

          The only other option is to do as others have suggested and "simulate" a maximized form by leaving it windowed and making it as large as possible. (Essentially what "wallpaper" does.)

          Another solution might be to maximize the main menu and open the other forms in popup or dialog mode. However, I found it very difficult to make that work "nicely" when I tried it - but that was many years ago and I don't recall the specific issues. For this reason, my apps run either will all forms maximized (99% of my apps are that way) or as an MDI app with no forms maximized.

            Thanks you for replying all,

            I will try to experiment with the various offered solutions, can i have a bit more explanation on how to do this :

              Here is a sample from my autoexec script

              Code:
              	dim vFormw as n
              	dim vFormh as n
              	dim global vMainPtr as p 'pointer to opening form

              	vMainPtr = :Form.load("OpeningScreen")

              	'adjust size with no menu bar
              	vMainPtr.height=vMainPtr.height + 50
              	vMainPtr.width=vMainPtr.width + 10

              	'get adjusted size to position objects
              	vFormw=val(word(vMainPtr.size_get(), 1, "x"))
              	vFormh=val(word(vMainPtr.size_get(), 2, "x"))

              	'center objects
              	vMainPtr.Companyname.Object.Left = (vFormw - vMainPtr.companyname.Object.width) / 2
              	vMainPtr.Copyright.Object.Left = (vFormw - vMainPtr.copyright.Object.width) / 2
              	vMainPtr.Copyright.Object.Top = vFormh - vMainPtr.copyright.Object.height

              	vMainPtr.activate()

              END FUNCTION

                Thank you Jeff,

                I will try to experiment with the provided code. I gave it a quick run (changing the values where needed) but it threw some errors at me. I did not have the time to look into that yet.

                  Re: Run application in full screen only

                  Keep in mind that the code in the section called "Center Objects" is just sample code of how to re-center the objects after you change the size of the screen and that the code left un-changed will give you errors if you do not have objects on the form with those exact names. You can delete those three lines altogether if not needed.

                    Thank you Jeff,

                    I had done that and replaced with an object on my form.

                    Haven't returned to it yet
