Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error With companionforms

    Hi,

I have a member set with 3 1 to many relationships, Invoice, logfile and Trans
these all seem to work fine (there is no referential intergty set).

I creat a form based on that set again no worries, i can edit in the browse for each of the links. on invoices, and trans I can used the Open CompanionForm active scripting they work fine, but when i try this with the logfile i get the error below:

    addin.variables().a5_error_show(Script:OnPush line:48
    a5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm(OpenMode,targetFormName,currentFormPointer,
Argument is incorrect data type) : Property not found

we are using activelink tables and they all work ok, it is just in this instance, i have even try new tables import etc. MYSQL 5 backend.

    Any ideas would be great.

    Re: Error With companionforms

    Hi Florian,

I know this is going to be difficult with active linked tables, but if you can make a small sample of you app with dummy data, post it here, we should be able to see what is going on.

      Re: Error With companionforms

      Florian,

I would abandon the use of companion forms altogether. They are unstable in my opinion. These are an example of ANOTHER quirky behavior I believe V9 exhibits. I am not using active link tables - just normal DBF's and I was getting the same error as you. It was very sporadic and not reproducible. I have since gotten rid of every companion form in the offending app and have not had a problem since. I just use a standard form and call it up with the appropriate record based on the linking field on the calling form You might have to place the linking field on the calling form so the link value is accessible when you call the child form. You can hide the field on the parent form if you don't want to show the linking value. It does not take long to switch over to this method and it has been much better since doing so.

      Regards,

      Jeff

          Re: Error With companionforms

          Hi

i narrowed it down, to a field defined as a time field if i take this filed out it works. the only daft thing is with other tables the time field works fine.

          Very very strange. Any ideas?

            Re: Error With companionforms

            Hi Florian

I think what you are seeing - the fact that the time field works in other areas but not in the one is an indicator of an inherent problem with companion forms. I have no idea what that problem is however. I doubt you are using the time field as the linking field so it should not matter if you have a time field on your form somewhere. I have a unique id field(UID) in every table. I generate a UID for every record in every table when the records are created. The field type is character in every case for my UID fields in all tables. So all my relationships between tables are just simple character field to character field links. Simple as you can get. I still had problems with Companion forms. Alpha generates its own "link" I believe when you use companion forms. My users could work for 2 days with no errors and then they would get the same error message you received. If they exited the app and came right back in - they could then do the EXACT same thing they were trying to do with no error. Has to be a problem with Companion forms in my opinion. I switched to the method I outlined above and have not had one error.

Just another observation...having a time field in a table should have nothing to do with whether a companion form can be opened properly or not. Perhaps it's a bug - maybe submit it to Alpha as such.

You asked for some more info on what I am doing now...see attached screen shots.

            Regards,

            Jeff

              Re: Error With companionforms

              Right
after a lot of trial and error i found the main issue here.
in active link file and MYsql you can specify the fetch limit, by default a 1000, So once i tried to enter a 1001th i got the error.

              Thanks for all your help.

Will start a nother thread asking if anyone has experience with SQL fetch limits etc and how best to manage them.
