Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Counting the characters in a memo field including crlf

    I tried to put the contents of a memo field into a character variable so I could then use the string functions to count the characters. However, only the first 38 characters of the memo field including crlf are in the variable. The code I used was placed in the onpush of button for trial purposes.

    Code:
    vcmemo = parentform:Browse1:Goods_desc.value
    topparent:Vcmemo.refresh()
    See pictures below for result. It appears there is a very small limit on the contants of a layout variable.

    Is this the case or have I done something wrong?

    Any suggestions on how else to accomplish the task of counting the characters in a memo field including crlf.

    Reason: I want to be able to adjust the length of a report based on the contents of memo fields.

    As usual any help is greatly appreciated.

    What length did you use for the format of the layout variable object on the form? - I thought there were format properties for a memo field, apparently there are not.
    Try

    Code:
    vcmemo = parentform:memtest.value
    ui_msg_box("",""+vcmemo)
    ui_msg_box("",""+len(vcmemo))

    There can be only one.

      If you put the memo into a rich text field on the report and set the properties of the rich text field to grow and shrink as needed, there should be no need to know the size of the memo.

        Tom,

        The memos print without any problems but I want the report to fill a A4 size sheet of paper at all times. I will need to count the number of lines each detail item is taking up to calculate how many dummy blank records I need to include to space it out to A4 size. Not sure how successful I will be but I thought I would give it a try.

          Stan,

          Yes works fine. It seems the limitation is the variable display when placed on a form. This isn't a requirement so not a problem.

          Thanks

            Why not put a "page break" into the report after the memo?

              Tom, I don't think I explained it very well. I have a details section that could contain 1 to many records. Each record has a memo field that contains a different amount of characters and crlf. The report could be 1 or more pages in length but I want the final page to contain the same amount of lines in its detail section as the other pages.

              Still not sure I'm explaining it that well or if it will be possible to do what I'm trying to do but if I have any success I will post it in the code archive.

              Thanks for help.

                Geoff,
                Is this because you need to put something at the end of the report? If so, why not use either a page footer, or a report footer and justify it to the bottom of the page?

                Are there any group breaks in the report? There are lots of things you could do without having to count lines.:)

                can you post a sample? That might help a bit.

                  Tom - In the help file under index type 'Report, Vertical Lines'. I am trying to do something similar but have the added difficulty of dealing with memo fields.

                    I just downloaded the revised help file and I don't get anything when I click on your topic.

                    I am guessing that you want to show vertical lines in your detail section, making the report look like a formatted work order or invoice , etc.

                    I've done similar things, but the report had a fixed maximum length and the last page didn't really matter.
