Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database does not come up

I am building my first DB and was chugging along nicely until just now. Suddenly when I open A5 and select my db, I simply get taken to the recent data base scree. It is as thouhg it no longer exits, but doesn't tell me anything. I have gone to the directory and double clicked the actual A5 adb and get the same result. I note the the adb is also really small. Given the amount of work I have done I would have thought it to be larger. I am not panicking yet, but I have done a lot of dedvelopment to date so I am hoping this is not a big deal. The only startup things I have doen are a simple autoexec to populate two variables and the control panel is accessed from the front menu by password. Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Mark,

Sounds like your ADB file has become corrupted.

I hate to ask this of a professional computer user, did you do a backup?

Have a backup, but last one is a couple days ago and I have done a lot in this time. I cannot see why this would occur all of a sudden. The nature of this occurrence would be experienced by others. Attached is the file zipped up.

        Hi Mark,

        All is not lost.

I made a couple of changes to the Database Properties and Autoexec.

Re: Database does not come up

          Hi All

Mark, just in case you don't know (I'm sure you do!!), your application is accessible by loading it with the 'Control' and 'Shift' keys pressed, and then choosing to not load the startup form.

Keith, I'm eager to learn. Why does moving the 'hide control panel' code from database properties to the autoexec make it all work?

          Alan
          Kind Regards

I have no idea, I wish I did. It took a few experiments to see what was not working and as hiding the CP was required then the best place was the autoexec.

Re: Database does not come up

Thank you for this - I will check it out. Is it possible to explain what went wrong? Does this relate to the control panel statement above?

As a completely new user I was not aware of the ctl shift key. very handy to know. Thanks Kieth for helping so quickly. The ability to uplaod Dbs etc in this site is a great way to get things sorted. I did start to build again and I noted that when I loaded all the tables into the new adb, I got the forms back, but not the scripts. I have done a lot of work in a database called lotus approach. If the apr file gets corrupted you lose all the work. I would have thought this to be the same with the A5 system. The fact that I got the forms back as well means they are stored elsewhere when created. The learning goes on fo rme. Once again thank you.

I believe what went wrong is your "Menu" form has a property mis-match with your database properties. The form is set to open maximized in the database properties, however, in the form's properties, on the window tab, window style, it does not have the "Can be maximized" checkbox checked. I changed this to allow the form to be maximized and then the application opens to the main menu with the control panel hidden and the "Menu" form maximized. I made no other changes to the database properties or autoexec file.
