Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Desktop shutdown and Application Server message

Is there a preference setting allowing you to disable the Application Server has been shutdown message in A5V9 desktop? It seems an unnecessary extra step to have to wait and then click Okay on the dialog everytime I shutdown the application.

    Hi Brad

Click the application server button to switch it off and then you have the option. See attached image.

That keeps Alpha from asking if I want to stop the server when I click on the Application Server button but I still get the dialog box when I'm closing Alpha Desktop which requires me to wait and then click the Informational message "The application server has been shut down because Alpha Five is closing." I was hoping there was a way to avoid this dialog box.

oh okay, should have read your question properly in the first instance!

I am not aware if this can be switch off but I agree it would be good to be able to do this.

Interesting timing! I added an option for this just yesterday. It will be in the next release.

But notice that Lenny did not say "next v9 patch," most likely because there won't be one.

Will this option appear in the nightly beta release of V10 and if so where will it be available? Thanks!

Yes, it should already be in the nightly beta release. There is a new checkbox on the General tab of the Application Server Settings dialog.

Ray, I do not know if there will or will not be another V9 patch, I am not directly involved in the patch release process. If there is a new V9 patch, this will get included in it, but I can't make a commitment either way.

There will be a lot of unhappy users if there isn't a V9 patch. It is already a blow to Alpha's credibility that there hasn't been a patch for a number of months even though several bug reports have been submitted. I remember seeing much praise on this board for the speed in which Alpha produces patches. Well this seems to have come to a complete halt and the message we are receiving is forget V9 we are only interested in V10 (specifically V10 web applications). Its as if they have written of V9 as a failed version and not worth the time to get it right.
The silence from Alpha is deafening on many of these issues. Talk to your customers. Nurture them, make them feel appreciated and there opinions and requests matter. Not something that comes naturally to Alpha by the looks of it. I posted a request on the wishlist forum that there was some feedback provided by Alpha regarding users requests. Sadly it seems to have also fallen on deaf ears and would suggest either Alpha do not read the wishlist or just can't be bothered to respond.
