Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Scroll pages instead of records?

Is there a way to configure A5, either globally or at the form/browse level, to scroll a page at a time instead of a record at a time?

I don't think so. You could have arrow buttons with something like:
    Code:
    for i = 1 to 9
       topparent:Browse1.fetch_next()
    next
setting the number to provide for what consititutes a page for your browse.

If there is a scroll bar on the right(settable) in a browse, you can scroll a page at a time by clicking on the vacant space instead of the up or down arrow.

Thanks for the responses, guys. What I'm really looking for is a way to quickly move up and down through a browse using the mouse wheel. Sounds like that's not possible. :-(

Yes it is. I actually had to reset the mouse in windows to stop the action in all programs. I think I got that right.

I believe if you can do it in other programs, it also works in Alpha.

It has been over a year ago since I crossed it, but there was discussion on that.

Dave is correct on both counts. A mouse wheel will move you up or down just like it does in most any program, at least in V9 with the "new" browse (pretty sure it is true with the old browse too). Also, as Dave said, clicking on the white area of the vertical scroll bar you move up or down one page a time. Seems that is all you wanted, right?

No, and I'll clarify: The wheel works now. Unfortunately, one click of the wheel is one record. I was hoping there was a way to have one click equal more than one record up or down. Get a browse on screen with a lot of records and try wheeling through it; your finger will wear out. Now compare that wheel action to what you see in browsers, or Word, or Excel, or you name it.

              Thx...

Have you tried clicking on the white space in the vertical scroll bar, as Dave suggested? That moves you down a full "page", the same as if you pushed the Page Down key on the keyboard. Or, if you hold down the Down arrow key, you rapidly move down.

In any case, in a database program such as Alpha Five, moving one record with each mouse wheel click makes perfect sense to me. I would not want it to do anything more than that, and when I want to do what you want, I usually use the Page Down key or sometimes the white space on the scroll bar. But, I guess, to each his own in terms of what is ideal.

Try this: Place your mouse in the white space between the up and down arrow and use your wheel. I think it will work for you.

                    Dave,

With the old browse that may work (i.e., work the same as excel, etc., which for me is 3 records per click). But with the "new" browse as it exists in v9, it does not work reliably. When I say "reliably" I mean I did get it to work once, but then when I did something else and tried it again nothing I did would more than one record per wheel click. This is fine if you can go back to the old browse but for me I am stuck having to use the new browse because some bugs fixes I got require the new browse even though the fixes (an unreleased patch) have nothing to do with the new browse. For purposes of this thread this is not a big deal for me but for other reasons it is.

                      Thanks Ray.

I can no longer test it here due to shutting of the scroller on my laptop because I was constantly changing records with the pad mouse.

I will see if I can figure it out some tomorrow on my desktop at work.

There has to be a way to get around this.
