Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Increment a duplicated record

    I am seeking help in trying to increment a date field ( by step 1) when I duplicate a record a <calculated field value> number of times. Is there a simple solution using action scripting or would it require something to be written in x dialog

        Re: Increment a duplicated record

        The simple method to increment a date value is, strangely enough,

        increment_value(date_field_name)

        the hard way is

        date_field_name + 1

        If you are doing this in a loop you could

        for d = 1 to however_many
        'other stuff to duplicate the record
        date_field_name + d
        'stuff to save the duplicated record
        next d
        There can be only one.

          You need to unzip these files into a directory. Then create a new database and add the testd table into the database.

            If all you need is to increment a date field by 1 each time you create a new record (calendar type):
            Make or leave the date field user entered, go to the Form/Browse, enter a starting date, go back to FR turn it into autoinc. Back to the layout, each time you create a new record, the date field is increased by 1 day. HTH

              Re: Increment a duplicated record

              Thanks for your input gabby but I am not trying to auto increment a new field I am trying to auto increment a existing field x number of times. I have tried to do so using xbasic (which I am useless at) and I can get the record to duplicate but I cannot get the resultant date field to increment. can anyone help ? My attemt at x basic is as follows:-
              DIM SHARED daynumber AS n
              daynumber = parentform:Days_count.value
              for d = 1 to daynumber
              topparent.duplicate_record(0)
              parentform:First_date.value + 1
              topparent.commit()
              next d
              Thanks in advance

                Re: Increment a duplicated record

                Never tried that approach but it seems like it should be

                Code:
                DIM SHARED daynumber AS n
                daynumber = parentformays_count.value
                for d = 1 to daynumber
                topparent.duplicate_record(0)
                [COLOR="Red"]parentform:First_date.value=[/COLOR]parentform:First_date.value + 1
                topparent.commit()
                next d
                This looks a bit strange

                parentformays_count.value

                should this be

                parentform:ays_count.value or

                parentform:days_count.value

                something mistyped?

                  Thanks Stan, I had succeeded in getting the function working using the code below before I read your reply. could you please comment on any improvements that can be made on this
                  DIM t as p
                  t=table.current()
                  DIM SHARED daynumber AS n
                  daynumber = parentform:Days_count.value
                  DIM SHARED fstdate AS d
                  fstdate = parentform:First_date.value
                  for x = 1 to daynumber
                  topparent.duplicate_record(0)
                  fstdate = increment_value(fstdate)
                  First_date.value = fstdate
                  topparent.commit()
                  next x

                    Re: Increment a duplicated record

                    I think that's basically what I suggested. You can collapse a few things.

                    Code:
                    DIM SHARED daynumber AS n
                    DIM SHARED fstdate AS d
                    daynumber = parentform:days_count.value
                    fstdate = parentform:First_date.value
                    for x = 1 to daynumber
                    topparent.duplicate_record(0)
                    First_date.value = increment_value(fstdate)
                    topparent.commit()
                    next x
                    You aren't using the t=table.current() so I took that out. Not sure of the purpose of diming the two of the variables as shared unless you're using them in another script.

                      Re: Increment a duplicated record

                      Thank you Stan. I have a very limited knowledge of xbasic and after many years i am trying to write some code. I am still trying to get my head around some of the required elements. But now you have pointed out the meaning of things like 'SHARED' I will continue with the code and hopefully improve.
