Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

System hangs when changing Browse property to Parents Records Only

I have a browse that I've defined based on a two-table set. I want to make this browse display only parent records. When I go into Browse Properties and select the "Parent Records Only" box and then click Okay, Alpha hangs and just continues to flash refreshes on the window with all records from the set still showing. At this point the only thing I can do is end-task Alpha from the System Task Manager. I'm using the A5v10 beta. Anyone else having this issue and should it be reported as a bug? I'm going to try recreating the browse from scratch to see if I can reproduce this in another browse.

I just created a new browse from the same set, set the columns to only include columns from the parent table, clicked on "Show Parent Records" and click Okay and Alpha hangs. I'll submit a bug report.

Brad, most people would base that browse on the parent table, without using a set. It's more efficient. Probably imposes less load on the network, too, since the linked records in the child table won't have to be moved to the local workstation when the browse opens.

        Tom:
I'm trying to create a "companion" browse for my Set Form to allow my customers to quickly browse for records based on just a few primary fields Name, Bill Number, City, State. I want them to be able to switch to a browse view to find and then switch back to form view for complete data entry. Since the form is based on a one-to-many set I set the browse up based on the same set. Is there a better solution using a browse only on the parent table that will still be linked to the form?

In that case don't click the setting to show parent table records only. That would defeat your purpose. You want navigation to include records in both tables even if your browse object only displays columns from the parent table.

Actually no, because my Parent record has only the information I want to display and I don't want it displayed six times (once for each linked child record). What I want is the equivalent of a collapsed parent/child browse outline but limited only to the single parent record. By the way, when I open the browse form with all records showing (parent and child) I am unable to collapse to parent only using Ctrl- or the Browse menu option. When I try this there is no change in the browse window. My set is a 1-M based on two tables and I'm doing a left outer join (showing all records from the parent regardless of whether a child record exists.)

Ahhh. I see. Sorry to be so dense. Let me cogitate.

Well I've been able to get the problem resolved. Patience! What I found was that when I select Parent Records Only and then close the browse I have to wait about two minutes and then Alpha asks if I want to save and once I do the browse only shows the parent records the next time I open it. Still seems like a bug in the save routine but at least it will work eventually.

Thank you for your comment. I ran into the same problem a few days ago and, after several hours of being completely frustrated, logged on to the message board and found your solution. As it is, your solution worked for me as well. But I agree, this has to be a v9 bug.
