Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I have been looking at how the searchby script works in the Alpha sports customer form. This is the one attached to the "on change" event field variable object named searchby. I have noted that when it encounters a blank set of records based on the search field the If/then statement fails. It does not reset the searchby variable to the "Lastname" as specified and therefor generates an error. The error was not obvious as the customer records all had at least one populated field so I had to update a set of records on a paticular field with null and then select it in the seach by list.

Looking at the script, I cannot see why it does not work, except that using debug, I can see the searchby text field is not reset with the field name "lastname" as specified. It simply keeps the last field name that was selected. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Mark, I see the same behavior here. The character string assignment to the "Text" property of the combo control seems to be failing.

Here's a work around. Changes highlighted in red.

dim shared vcSearchby as C 'declared in form layout, this line references the same variable
'set the column heading of the browse object to be the same as the entry selected in the combo box.
topparent:Browse1:Lastname.Object.Column_title = searchby.text
'Set the width of the column in the browse to 30 (it will have gotten set to a smaller value when the SearchBy variable was changed)
Browse1:Lastname.Entry.Width = 30
'bind the browse column to the fieldname selected in the drop down list
Browse1:Lastname.Entry.Name = "customer->" + searchby.text
'now sort table by the field that was selected
dim tbl as p
dim inxP as p
tbl = table.current()
indxP = tbl.order(searchby.text,searchby.text + " <> \"\"")
if indxP.records_get() = 0 then
'modifications by Tom Cone Jr 090817
'Re-set to Lastname order without trying to assign text to text property of combo control
ui_msg_box("Error","There are no records with non-blank values in the selected order. Resetting to lastname order.")
topparent:Browse1:Lastname.Object.Column_title = "Lastname"
Browse1:Lastname.Entry.Width = 30
Browse1:Lastname.Entry.Name = "customer->Lastname"
indxP = tbl.order("Lastname","Lastname <> \"\"")
vcSearchby = "Lastname"
sys_send_keys("{DOWN}") 'to refresh display in combo control, shift focus away from combo control
end if
'move the record pointer to the first record in the table
'if the multistate button has been pressed, un-set it.
'to un-set it, set to '1' Any value that is not 'A' through 'Z' would work.
if lower(mulstbtn1.text) >= "a" .and. lower(mulstbtn1.text) <="z" then
mulstbtn1.text = "1"
end if
'resynchronize the form with the data in the underlying table

Re: Search problem

Thank you Tom,

You pointed me in the right direction. I found the lack on topparent: in referencing the controls to be an issue and it was your send key that finally fixed it. For some reason nothing would refocus the control to the text property until I used the send key down. Well done!
