Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    database on a Ramdisk

    a5 guru,

pls. i need your suggestion on this

    i have a windows 2003 server, 4gb ram, i set the 3gb to a ramdisk using a QSOFTRAMDISK ENTERPRISE.

so far my database size is only 1.5gb
my database in the ramdisk is sync (write mode) in to an image file in the local drive. i've notice the overall performance of my database in the LAN is very fast (ratio is some what 25x to 50x speed).

is this a good or bad setup?
is there a possible problem will arise on this setup.

    tnx.

    Re: database on a Ramdisk

    You could have problems.

When operating in a ram disk, everything you do is in memory. You have to make sure to save all back to the hard drive before you shut down. Also, A power failure???

writing data to a dbf in ram disk is probably unmeasureably fast compared to a regular disk. The tables have to be saved back to disk as well as .fpt and cdx files. The rest is no problem.

    Hope i helped.

When we used a ram disk in the 80's and later it was mostly for compiling exe's(large ones). In those days it could take an hour(or more) to compile and it took 10 minutes in a ram disk. We would sometimes load the whole program in a ram disk and write the data back to disk on every save to avoid loss. We also had to work out our own memory spaces for the loading of the programs without the ram disk. It was a lot harder then! Alpha does most of this for us now and windows makes it real easy with their memory alottment system.

It takes some planning with a ram disk, but could possibly be beneficial if used right.

I do NOT plan using a ram disk anymore.

I don't see RAM disks used anymore. I suspect part of the reason is the OS caches disk reads and writes much better than in the 80's.

Overall, the push is to use SQL (not just by Alpha) and SQL doesn't use RAM disks.

        tnx to all.

        now i know.

it is better to use local drive for safety data recording and use sql to give more speed to alpha.

and i'll upgrade my LAN100 to LAN1gb for more speed (10x)

        tnx.
