Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Suggestions for a NewB - Advice Please!

    Good day?

I am workint to make a small parts database for my organization. I understand how to build the database and forms, but I don't know if I should build it as a locaroot web app or just a A5 database for desktop.

If I install the application on our server, how do multiple users log on to use the database from our LAN? I am confused about runtime licenses.

Perhaps I should just make this a web application and have users use the data from the pc browser??

If you build based on the local root, one computer will need to run the application server all the time. This must be a windows machine. Then all your clients would log on via a web browser to do there work. Unless you are establishing this to be for external access, then they will simply put in the applications server IP. There is some good info on this on main Alpha5 Support in documents.
    See
    http://www.alpha5.com/documentation/afas_setup/

If this is not external, then you need to to argue between local db versus web. In both cases you need to create the tables as you would create a DB.

I personally would build a DB with forms first as you get the workflow thrashed out much easier. Then use this as the template for the web. The web can use all the same tables as well, so their is no duplication of this aspect

OK, thanks,...so I have a 1 user Platinum license. If three more machines need access to the database what method/tool do I use to allow multi user access?

Since I only have a 1 user license it sounds like I need to shell out $99 per extra co-user since the application needs to be open on the desktop at all times for each machine. Right?

If not, what am I missing?

Did you buy the latest sale which included unlimited runtime. If you did than all you need to do is install the DB with runtime on the other machines. Once installed, point the shortcuts to the server version so that all are using the same one.

You only need the one platnum lic for dev work

That's a good question which makes me nervous! I bought:
          1Alpha Five Version 9 Platinum Edition - 1 User

1Alpha Five V9 Application Server Platinum Edition

1Alpha Five v9 Total Web AppsNot Required
          1Alpha Five E-Commerce Application

Should I ask for a refund and replace? Which one of these will allow me to make an .exe file for the other machines?

Looks like you got everything - but the unlimited. The recent offer was for them all at about $300US

I would talk directly with Alpha on that

Will do. Now the other question....I used A4 years ago and it contined a method to create an exe for distribution.

I've been looking at the help file and forum but remain perplexed as to what you use to install a client runtiime on each of the pcs AND where you get the applicaiton..

Is it just some subset of the developers version??

Tools ->Utilities ->create installer. This wizard walk you through the steps for distribution.
If you have runtime you will have access to this. All you need is the runtime license number for distribution

                    Hi Ubuntu,

Since you have "1Alpha Five V9 Application Server Platinum Edition", why not make use of it? That way, you are set to go.

After some more research I think I may go ahead with the web app. But I still want the unlimited runtime too.

My lingering question with the web app is if I can easily customize the look of the html pages [color and logo] and also print labels instead of reports.

Alpha does NOT compile exes. The RT is identical to the full version - except you cannot create or modify applications with it.

The web app and the desktop versions are different animals. However, as stated above, you can share your tables and reports (and labels) between the two. Forms and GUI cannot be shared.*

Yes. Of course, "easily" is in the eye of the developer. But it's no big deal to change colors or fonts, etc.

One other note. Version 10 is the mother of all web application development packages IMHO. It will be released soon. Not to mention that v10 will have a modeless property editor for forms on the desktop side, not to mention that you can create web grids (*except for this) and run them on the desktop in v10. No, I'm not on Alpha's payroll, but I call a spade a spade.

                          Peter,

I appreciate your always honest opinion(s) and like your enthusiastic endorsement of V10.

I haven't gotten the V10 beta. Have you had any issues running apps under V10 that were developed in V8 or V9?

                            Hi Bob,

Sorry. Haven't tried to run any v8/v9 apps in v10. Am (and will be) creating new web app(s) in v10 as part of beta testing. As far as I know, desktop features have not yet been introduced into the beta, although any day now...
