Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Right-align #'s not lining up correctly

    Is there a glitch in v.9 for right-aligning #'s?

Here is what is happening. I have 3 fields lined up (all 3 boxes are exactly the same size - height/width) and I used the "arrange" to make sure they are lined up to the right.

The last box (field) I chose to have the format as $123,456.78

See image below as to what is happening. The #'s in the bottom box are shifted over to the left a little.

If I choose the format as 123,456.78, the #'s are lined up correctly with the #'s in the boxes above. As soon as I change it back to $123,456.78, the #'s do not line up with the boxes above.

I had no problems with this in my earlier version.

I've tried creating a form from scratch and it is doing the same thing.

Earlier version being???? V8 or the previous build in v9?

Open a form in the AlphaSports database and try it there. If the same thing happens in AlphaSports, then it's a bug for sure. If it works OK, it may still be a bug because it may be conflicting with something on your form that is not on the AS database form.

I've seen numerous little things like that in my creations and I've come to the conclusion they are little gremlins. How one would give instructions so they can replicate the problem is beyond me. It's just not always possible. So, I either live with it or try a different approach.

      Hi Carol:
I noticed that if you choose a format that uses a symbol like the $ or ( ), A5 creates a space between the number and the right edge. To have all your numbers aligned they have to be formated the same way; all with $ or all with ( ) or all without any symbol.

        Hi Carol,

I have noticed this too. It is a bit of a bind but there are several work arounds.

First you can keep the numbers in their normal format and drop the field into a RTF with the currency sign. Or, you can make all the fields calculated, convert them with Alltrim() and Str() and add the currency sign there.

Just another thought for the pot.

          Earlier version is v.5

I opened the invoice in AlphaSports. All the fields for totals, etc. are with the $ sign.

I changed all of them (except the bottom one) to the format without the $ sign (123,456.78) and the same thing is happening there, so it has to be a bug in the program.

That's a little crazy. I wouldn't think you should have to do that. If they are all right-aligned with 2 decimal places, they should still line up. I didn't have to have them all formatted in my v.5 - so I believe it's a bug.

Thanks, Keith. I have no idea how to do the work around - I am still learning just the basics. Maybe some day I'll know more about Alltrim(), Str()'s and that sort of thing.

                Hi Carol,

There is nothing to be afraid of and you will only hold your self back if you do not try and and do a little coding. Here is an example of what I am suggesting.
                Code:
                grand_total = "$"+alltrim(str(calc->sub_total+calc->amt_tax,10,2))
This a calculated field from the Alphasports Invoice. It is still calculated but converted into a string. When it is right aligned, the blank to the right is no longer there.

I agree this should not need to be done, but since there is the problem............

This is an issue with where the sign of the number is placed.

If you choose the format -$123,456.78 you will get the desired results. (Notice that the sign is now on the left side of the number...)

I don't have a previous version to compare with, but you can submit a bug report showing a difference between versions.

Okay - this works - but I don't understand why the other one doesn't. I would have never thought to use this format.

I suspect it would go in the events, OnPush? OnInit???

                        Hi Carol,

You are not dumb. What I have shown you is a calculated field, not an Event.

Open Invoice form in Alphasports in design mode. I know you know how to do this.

Click on the XY button on the toolbar, this will open the dialog box of calculated fields. This is where you will see all the calculated fields used on the form.

You will see in this dialog the calculation for grand_total, it is this field I have used the functions alltrim() and str().

I suggest you have a good look in the help file. This will help you get more from Alpha.

No, I have not had time. We have been out of town and we just got home and I have tons of stuff to catch up on.

If you want to do it, that would be fine.
