Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Or relationship

I have a transaction log (checkbook) where an account name might be the payor for one transaction and the payee in another. I want to display that ledger as a browse for the account - showing both credits and debits.

I am maintaining the data in one transaction table. I can create a query and report that shows what I want to see - a ledger of all transactions.

How can I make that ledger a subform of the account?

Pardon me if I misunderstand, but aren't you going to need a second table? Wouldn't this be a matter of defining a two table set? The primary table would be a table that contains your chart of accounts, linked by account number to the transaction table using a one to many link?

I do have a table linking back to accounts (and several other tables as well) - but the transaction table contains information like this:

      UFCU 08/23/09 Payment 9999 HomeHeating Utilities 437.00
      TheJob 08/24/09 Deposit 13827 UFCU Paycheck 1701.00

The first line is a payment (ie. debit) from the account UFCU and the 2nd line is a deposit (ie. credit) to the account UFCU.

I can run a query where UFCU is the payor or the payee and get the ledger I am looking for. But I want to display this as a table - not a query - and I want to be able to edit the data if I need to.

While browsing here last night, I saw that someone used variables - not even a set - to link the two - but I've lost that post (it was early this morning)

I think the terminology may be a little mixed up here. A table is your data set/file. A query is a filtered subset of the table data. You can edit the queried data the same way you edit the un-queried data. So, what is it that you would like to do?

          I have two tables -
          Account
          Transactions (of account)

I cannot get the relationship between the two to work so that I can see a subform showing all transactions relative to the account (both debit and credit). I want one view of the transaction table - much like you would see if you were to open your (paper) checkbook ledger.

I want the Transaction table to be a subform of the Account table. I can create 2 relationships - fromacct and toacct - and get 2 subforms - one showing payments and the other showing deposits.

I can create a query where trans.account = account.account -OR- trans.payee = account.account and it shows me what I want to see - and I can use that to obtain a running total of the balance on the account. But I cannot get this to display as a subform table.

            Modify your set to:
Account 1-Many Transaction link or filter on Payor
Account 1-Many Transaction (Alias) link or filter on Payee

When you scroll through the parent, one browse will show the the related records for the parent as Payor, the other will show the related records for the parent as Payee.

              Re: Or relationship

              That's what I have -

              1:M where account is payor
              1:M where account is payee

TWO relationships. TWO browses. I must be missing something.

I found the attached screenshot on the message board last night - and have not been able to find it back again - how is this guy doing this?

I don't know what "this guy" is doing but I don't think he is doing what you want to do. Hard to tell from the image, but looks like a single table to me which could be another alternative.

If you already have that set structure, and
If you want to show XYZ Corp and in the same line show whether it is a credit or debit, all you have to do is create a calc field(s).
I don't know how is your table structured and whether you have a field that says Payor/Payee or a different one saying Debit/Credit or simply the amount is entered as positive vs negative so it's hard to make a specific suggestion on what this calc field(s) would be, but basically would be something like this:
                Debit=if(some_field="Payor",amount,0)
                Credit=if(some_field="Payee",amount,0)
And then you put these calc fields in the browse and you will have what you want.

Duh. O how easy. Sometimes my brain gets cluttered trying to understand these things. It works. Thank you.
