Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Vertical titles for browse columns?????

I have an embedded browse with 35+ narrow (1 chr) columns and would like to create vertical titles using fields populated by a table. All works just fine until I try to line up the vertical fields with columns in the browse.

I can make the width of the titles the same as the browse column but they still don't line up. Alparently .125 doesn't always equal .125 in Alphaland. What's even more anoying is that I can line them up with the cursor in design mode, but they are not lined up when I open the form.

I played a bit with grid sizes and turned snap on and off but am not having a lot of luck. It seems I'm missing something simple.

Anyone else have this problem? And any ideas on a solution?

Is this something like you are trying to do?

Exactly. Just that I eventually will have around 50 fields.

Here's a shot of my example in design mode. My text boxes for the first few fields are using Arial Black as font, font size 7 (think it works for other sized. Set to left alignment with 270 degree text rotation. I had to make the boxes about .4 inches or so. That is the white lines in the design title image.

Or how about this? I'm never sure which one is easier to read. This is just the regular horizonal label but with a CR after each letter, then the Horizontal Alignment is set to Centre.

For David's method here is image of font choice. The first two are Arial 14 and the last two are Monospace821 14.(14 used to make more viewable in example)

Re: Vertical titles for browse columns?????

Thanks David & Mendy. I appreciate the input. I'm basically doing what you suggest. The only major differences are that the values in the titles come from a table that the user maintains. And that my fields have borders.

And the borders are the problem. I haven't been able to find a way to line up the borders around the titles with the lines seperating the columns in the browse. But looking at your examples, I think I'll try taking the borders off and see how that looks. Because of the large number of fields I thought the borders would help the eye determine which title went with which column, but I might be wrong.

Again, thanks a million for sharing. I can always benefit from another perspective!

Possibly you could alternate colors like a vertical "greenbar" effect?
                There can be only one.

Re: Vertical titles for browse columns?????

Thanks, Stan, I'll try that. Might be a bit confusing though, because I currently change the font color based on boxes the user has checked at the top of the form. Certainly worth a try.

I guess what would really help is if anyone knows the difference between the "width" dimension for a field on a form vs. the "width" dimension of a column on a browse. I think the field includes the frame where the column probably does not include the thickness of the lines between columns. In any event, making them equal didn't work. So I tried tweaking the values, but Alpha keeps readjusting the new values so I'm shooting at a moving target. So - back to trying to adjust with the cursor - which is close, but only close.

Will try the "greenbar" effect - albeit I'll have to go with "rosebar" to fit with the "Gray Lines" theme.

As an aside - on a day when things have not been going very well, it's a real joy to know there are still folks out there who know what "greenbar" is/was! :)

where the column probably does not include the thickness of the lines between columns.
Absolutely correct on this---I have a bug report since March (fixed once, then broke again since) that proves this in fact. If you "hide" browse columns by setting its width to 0, you will notice a remnant which grows with each successive hidden column--clicking on this remnant gets rid of it. Cian (from Alpha) figured out that the remnant was due to the separator column lines were not considered when a column width was set to 0.

                    Just a FYI really.

Thanks Mike. You Wisconsin boys sure are sharp!! :)

Now if we just knew the width of that line, and if Alpha would/could use the declared width when we enter it MY problem would be solved. :)

Meanwhile I'm trying some of the other suggestions posted here - hope to find some combination that doesn't look too bad.

And finally, are you going to be around this weekend? I'll be at the cottage (Almond) but just might get in to Point for a beer.

I just quoted the relevant parts! :D

I may go to a local fair but otherwise I'll be here. Just give a holler and we can meet up.
