Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating Labels Problem: Cannot Preview

I'm working my way through the DVD with tutorials, all was fine til I got to the creation of labels... I can add fields as it suggest from the Alphasports customers table, however, when I go to PREVIEW I'm getting a blank page. Any help here..

    thanks

Re: Creating Labels Problem: Cannot Preview

1 are there records in the table??

2 have you put in any filters that would not allow records to show??

I have never done the dvd tutorials, so may not be the best one for your question

      YES 61

Oddly. when I checked in properties for this label and turned on then off the "Base report on current selection" I got a Preview, only to have the problem repeat after adding some fields. I have not been able to reproduce this anomaly. Only get the blank preview all white page....

Re: Creating Labels Problem: Cannot Preview

I would pack the database at this point.

If it does not clear up, remove the fields in reverse order and see if the preview comes back.

If it still does not work, please give a working sample of what you have in a zip file on here and let us look at it. Make sure any private data is removed or scrambled?

Re: Creating Labels Problem: Cannot Preview

I did as you suggested, packed the customer dbf, then one by one deleted the fields from the label and ran preview without any luck. So I've zipped up the customer dbf files and attached them. 1900 x 1200 is the screen resolution, wonder if that is the problem?

thanks again David (note: a message window pops up for a split second that says Print Preview, Initializing Report Components, then disappears leaving a blank page)

            Bob,
Must be something on your end as it previews just fine here---make sure you are on the latest, new browse build of version 9.

Mike thanks for taking a look at this and confirming that the problem is on my end. I do have the latest greatest version, build 2095 with System Addins build 3264.
I've noticed this morning the problem "comes and goes" in that I can get a label to preview once... and then the problem begins only after I try again with that or any other label.???

I'm using a 25" ACER monitor and have played with different resolutions without any luck. (1900 x1200 is where I'm keep it) I could just move along but this early in the training I'd like to nip this one in the bud.

                Bob

                Try an experiment for me.

I usually save an object before previewing... Really is a best practice...

But I've noticed that the preview sometimes doesn't work, unless I make a change and don't save the object. (perhaps a slight movement of an object or adding another field)

                Then the preview works.

If I then save the change, the preview stops working again.

Can you see if that happens to you also. If we can create a repeatable issue, then it's a fixable issue for Alpha.

Re: Creating Labels Problem: Cannot Preview

Bingo!!! Yes... upon opening the database I can preview the labels, with or without a change or edit of any kind. Then what happens is,with or without a change or edit it will not preview???? However, when I close & reopen the database I CAN PREVIEW, but again, ONLY ONCE and then I have to repeat the process, close and reopen the database. Big thanks to you Al... should we both report this?

Now I can move on and work-around this issue for now...

                    Bob

Please report it. A sample of the database and instructions on how to recreate it step by step always produce the best results.

                    Thanks
                    al

ps - does making a change and not saving allow the preview to work? Then after saving does the preview stop working?

                      Bob and Al,

My testing seems to indicate that this has already been fixed in an as yet unreleased V9 patch. Trouble is, IF history repeats itself as it usually does, Alpha won't release this fix in another V9 patch. To get this and many other essentially V9 fixes you'll have to spring for V10. As you may know, this kind of insane marketing strategy makes this long time Alphaholic want to scream--to the point where it is extremely unlikely that I will be springing for anything anymore. Which makes me very sad.
