Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V10 Desktop features

I know many of you have said that you don't plan to upgrade to V10 because the concentration has been on the Web features. That said, I really think that you should TRY it before you make that decision. I have been working with the full V10 Beta this am and , I am blown away by the stuff that has been added to the desktop. The automatic backup feature when designing forms and reports, as well as the new properties dock (with dynamic control of just about everything) are features that I would think would be worth the price of an upgrade alone. When it is available for a trial download, download it, you won't be disappointed. Alpha 5 has come a loooong way....

    Hi Bill,

Which build are you using. I downloaded the latest builds (I think)(2431 3346) and don't see any of those features yet. Is there anything specific you had to do to activate them.

I'm running Windows 7. What issues are you having? I've worked through a number of the tutorials and samples. I had one sample that the screen was an odd size. Not sure what I did. It only took a little time to redo the entire project and it worked fine the second time.

The problem has to do with having an activex control on a report and converting the report to a pdf/text file/excel file etc. BSOD occurs when doing this, only on Win 7 32&64 bit version.

I personally will look for one feature and one feature only to decide if I'm going to upgrade: The Browse.

If the browse looks exactly the same, without the ability to do grouping as people have been clamoring for, then I absolutely will not upgrade under protest.

Having a calendar feature and change to that dreadful SimpleChart would help too.

                JP,
without the ability to do grouping
Something like the attached screenshots where you can add groups, sub-totals, totals, etc.?

The left field is normally hidden but what is in green is user added--all others are actual table fields or calculated fields.

You can also have Detail or "roll up" into a Summary. I cannot share the code but all could be done since v8. Not something that can be done "out of box" in Alpha, but definitely not an advanced method either really. The gist of it is to add grouping fields to sort by is all.

                dreadful SimpleChart
I am curious as to what is needed in addition to what SimpleChartLite offers? 3D maybe? or fancier graphs? Or is the "dreadful" related to the difficulty in utilizing it??

You make exactly my point. Like a lot of things Alpha, it can be done but it takes a ton of work.

Can you be a little more specific on how to do this?

Uhhhh, all of the above. It takes two dozen lines of XBasic to create a silly little 2d chart?

If I knew your first name I could! :p

                    all of the above.
Does RMChart do enough? I may have a way to use it in a report (doesn't work as is currently). This charting software is freeware but is also no longer being developed--no website either any longer so have to use Google to find out its capabilities...use RMChart Image as search words to see some charts it can produce.

That is why I created a function for this--one function with most chart parameters as arguments that generate any SimpleChart automatically.

....I have just started messing with it again so may be available soon (along with the RMChart possibly but that will take longer as just started with it). I am thinking of creating not only the function but a form/xdialog interface as well to control the charting....do not know if there is enough demand for this though is why development only occurs when I need something more.
