can i make a number negative

cant find any info on how to do this.

when my firm receives a commission for a salesperson, we add it to a table which produces commission statements.

we take a cut of the salesmans commissions, so it is my intention that when we add a record for the commission, i progmatically add a second record with the correct deduction.

i do not want a complicated accountancy system just a simple report showing positive commissions and negative deductions.

i have the code working fine up to the point that it is obviously showing the 'networks deduction' as a positive, when i need it to be negative.

is this something that i can do?

Seems to me you want positive commissions and negative commissions OR you want postitive commissions and positive deductions. Must be missing something.

To convert a numeric value that's positive to a negative numeric just multiply it by negative 1.

that worked great.

i probably didnt make it clear.

example,

we receive �1000 of which we retain �250 and pass �750 to salesman.

i add one record for �1,000 and another for -�250.

both show on the salesman statement giving him/her the correct net commission due to them.

It is not necessary to add a second record since you can make your cut as a calculated field in the same record, but if you want to add the second record, just multiply your cut by -1

part of the calculation is derived from a value of a field in another table, so i didnt think i could do this in field rules

Richard, it just goes to show how differently people think. I think a negative deduction is a credit. In this situation I'd store the deduction amount as positive, and subtract it when doing the calc. Interestingly, you store it as a negative value and add it when doing the calc. We wind up in the same place, but get there by different routes.

imsure your way is the right way, i just didnt want to get over complicated with this and couldnt think of another way to do.

my initial thought was to manange it as a set of accounts, but i thought this would over complicate what i needed to achieve.

im sure as we develop this part of our app further i may be pushed in to another way of doing this. hope not!!!

You can.
The same way it's "derived" from another table, could be derived to field rules using any lookup functions or anything similar.
