Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

sys_shell and Out of Memory Error

Having an issue with assigning the onPush action Run a Windows Program to a button. I specify the path to the the program I want to run, but when I push the button in the form I get an Out of Memory error.

    here is the code:

    'Open program: C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe
    if file.exists("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe") then
    sys_shell("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe ",1)
    else
    ui_msg_box("Error Opening Program","File 'C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
    end if

    Jeffrey

I changed your code in the ui_msg_box (marked in red). Your original code was causing an A5.editor error which could have been the problem

    Code:
    'Open program: C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe

    if file.exists("C:\Program files\CoffeeCup software\coffee.exe") then
           sys_shell("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe",1)
    else
            ui_msg_box("Error Opening Program[COLOR="Red"]","File "+"\"C:"+"\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe\"does not exist.",[/COLOR]ui_stop_symbol)
    end if
You had single quotes after the word File in the message - you could either get rid of the single quotes or you could use the escape character "\" to show the quotes within the message - I used the escape character to allow for the quotes in the string

That could have been the reason behind the out of memory - but not sure.

    FWIW

Thanks, but still have the problem. Also the code I posted was the Xbasic code generated using the Action scripting option for running a windows program.

My only other suggesting would be substitute

        Code:
        Sys_shell_wait("C:/Program Files/CoffeeCup Software/Coffee.exe")
        for the

        Code:
        Sys_shell ("C:/Program Files/CoffeeCup Software/Coffee.exe",1)
        in the code.

Not that this is the solution, but this recently happened to me and so I tried minimizing the Alpha window first and then called the program - and it worked.

Are you absolutely, positively, unquestionably, indubitably (yes, that is a word), and beyond any shadow shadow of a doubt certain that the full path and file name are correct - including spaces? Usually an "Out of Memory" error with this function means it can't find the file.

Re: sys_shell and Out of Memory Error

Activate the interactive editor and copy-paste this line

                sys_shell("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe ",1)

                then <enter>.

That should tell us whether the issue is with the line or the action scripting element.

                or sys_shell("c:\windows\notepad.exe ",1)
                or sys_shell("c:\windows\explorer.exe ",1)
                There can be only one.

Pardon me, since I am a newbie... how do I activate the interactive editor?

                  Never mind figured it out...

                  I get:
                  ERROR: Out of memory

                  sys_shell("c:\windows\notepad.exe ",1)
                  sys_shell("c:\windows\explorer.exe ",1)

                  both work

The correct term is actually the "Interactive Window" but it is often referred to as the Interactive Editor. Go to the A5 Control Panel and look in the toolbar. You will see "Interactive Window" with a question symbol in front of it - just click it. (You can also do a "View/Code Editor" but I prefer to just click the Interactive Window button.)

                      Thanks, Cal..

Ok. Now navigate to c:\windows\ and copy notepad.exe. Navigate to c:\program files\coffeecup software\ and paste notepad.exe.

                      Then try the line

                      sys_shell("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\notepad.exe ",1)
                      There can be only one.

                        sys_shell("C:\Program Files\CoffeeCup Software\Coffee.exe ",1)

                        I get
                        ERROR: Out of memory

                        For

                        sys_shell("c:\windows\notepad.exe ",1)
                        sys_shell("c:\windows\explorer.exe ",1)

                        both work fine.

I am wondering, would it be an issue with Visa?

so it looks to be an issue with the app Coffee.exe

The program is set to run as administrator. Could that be an issue?
