Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error in converting Microsoft mdb file

customer has Access 97 file. used File->open database to point to mdb file. It then shows the tables but when i try to open them i get this:

Could not create ResultSet from DataSource definition.

Could not execute query against Database. Error reported was:

    Database API specific error

Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
Consult your database documentation for further information.

-1907 - '[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Record(s) cannot be read; no read permission on 'Customers'.
    SQL State is: 42000'

1907 says "Socket error getting host name" which does not make sense to me. do not know where to lookup the SQL error code to see what that is.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Don,

You cant open an Access database with Alpha.

First you create your Alpha application then you either create a link or import to a new table within your application.

    Hope that helps.

Re: Error in converting Microsoft mdb file

      Thanks.

I did create a database and when I tried to import the mdb table is when I got the error. I tried using the Alpha ADO and the standard ADO with the same result. Am going to contact the people who created the Access and see if it was User/password encoded. That is the only thing I can think of that would inhibit the read function.

      ****
Called the Access company and they say the mdb is NOT user/password protected. not sure where to go from here. The data file is 370+Mb in size so not easy to get to.

        Hi Don

When you are building the connection string, do you click the Test Connection button?

Yes it does connect. When i use Access and open the mdb and check the format it says it is Access 95 format. that may be part of the problem. When I try to convert it tho it says the "current user account does not have permission to convert or enable this database". Have got an appointment with one of their tech people set up for Monday afternoon eastern so we will see what happens there.

            Hi Don,

What are you trying to convert?

If the connection works you should be able to create forms and reports regardless of which version of Access it is.

am trying to extract the data to dbf files so client can do his own manipulation of the data. i.e. custom reports he wants to do ad hoc.

                Hi Don,

Your client can create ad hoc reports from the linked table.

There is no need to convert anything.

Something you could try, create a new table in alpha and append the data from the link table.
