Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xdialog Currency Formatting

    I want to use an xdialog box which include a rental field. I would like this rental field to be displayed with $ sign and commas as appropriate.

    Can someone suggest how I can do this. I am trying to use [text edit control].

    Thanks
    Truman

    Re: Xdialog Currency Formatting

    Code:
    amt = 123.45

    ? str(amt,7,2,"$(B")
    = "$123.45"

    amt = 121113.45

    ? alltrim(str(amt,19,2,"$(B"))
    = "$121,113.45"
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan

      Thanks for your prompt reply, but I think that I did not state my problem correctly. The attached file shows the code I am using to edit a rent payment record. My problem is how to format the rent variable in currency values and allow the user to change the values which then are added to the table.

      Are you suggesting that I can insert the str(...) command in my xdialog?

      Thanks
      Truman

        Don't see a way to do that. Maybe something like the attached screenshot would do?

          Thanks Stan

          That is a clever idea.

          A least you confirmed what I was afraid I found out - you can't do it.

          I guess what is needed is a directive like %TF= %" for currency and number formating. I would have thought that xdialog would have all the formating properties that are available for fields in a form.

          Thanks again

            Re: Xdialog Currency Formatting

            Here is how you do it:
            Code:
            ui_dlg_box("rent",<<%dlg%

            	{region}
            	{lf};
            	Change information in the Fields.
            	{endregion};
            	{frame=1,1}
            	{region}
            	Payment Date: | [.14vdate];
            	Rent: | [.50vpayment!pmt_*];
            	Comment: | [.75vComment];
            	{endregion};
            	{lf};
            	{justify=right}
            	<10&OK!ok> <10&Cancel!cancel>;
            	 %dlg%,<<%code%
            	       if a_dlg_button = "pmt_killfocus"
            	       	        a_dlg_button=""
            	       vpayment=ltrim(str(val(vpayment),15,2,"$,"))
            	else
            	a_dlg_button=""
            	end if
            	%code%)

              Maybe you should post a "wishlist" item requesting a smart "currency" control? -- tom

                Doesn't alpha already have that? Isn't called a form? An xdlg with smart controls?

                    Yes Tom, I totally understand what you mean....my point is, by the time alpha does that (smart controls for xdlg, drag and drop fields..etc) it ends up being, what else? a form.

                      I understand what you are saying - there are limits to what you can add to xdialog. I already can change fonts, size, color, format date BUT I can't format numbers. I don't understand why you can't format numbers. Is that too much to hope for?

                      Cheers

                          Re: Xdialog Currency Formatting

                          I have had a first go at your script.

                          It works but still causes a bit of a work around. Intially vpayment was numaric so it seems that I have to convert vpayment to character and then when I replace the field I will have to convert it back to numaric. A minor problem is that I will also have to use your script to convert vpayment to currency format for the first time the xdialog opens.

                          Thanks. I really had not thought of, or perhaps not had an idea how to program, the little function you suggested.

                          Cheers

                            Truman, commas and dollar signs are not "numeric" values as far as the computer is concerned. To display them the computer must convert "numeric" to character strings, and vice versa. You can "format" the "display" of a number, but you can't do that without working with character type data.

                              I knew that. Now why didn't I think of that?!

                              Maybe I just have to use a form (sort of Gabriel's comment).

                              Thanks
