Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Date Range (Non-Programmer)

I'd like to display the from and to dates at the top of a report based on the dates selected in the on-push script used. I've seen this somehwere in the documentation, but can't recall the term used to describe this. I'm using Version Nine.

    Can someone help me out?

    Thanks!

    Re: Date Range (Non-Programmer)

You're looking to understand Global variables. When you define the input controls for date_begin and date_end, dimension them as Global.

Also, in your report design, establish exactly the same variables, making them Global.

Then drag/drop the variables into your report where you want to display them, and the value will show at print/preview time.

If there's any particular step here where you're having trouble, let us know. Action scripting to build an XDialog box and then run the print process should walk you right on through it.

You could probably set variables in the script and then use them in your report to display the dates, but I'd need more specifics to give more detail. What's the on-push script being run? Something you've written? Something built-in?

        Re: Date Range (Non-Programmer)

I've been creating a report and then using the EVENT OnPush to access the Code Editor.

A new action is added and then using the Script Genie to slect the options and to select the records. I'm using the "Prompt for Parameters at Runtime" option and creating a filter to ask for the beginning and ending dates.

These are the dates that I want to display on the report header to make sure the date range is known on the reports generated.

Since these reports will be sent out via e-mail as PDF files, the people reading them need to know what dates are covered.

After reading these replies, it wappeas that I may be able to set the variable as part of the OnPush Script. Since I'm REAL new at this, it will required some more reading, along with some trial and error.

        Thanks for you help!

          Try this instead:

Using the Action Scripting genie, create two actions:

(Action 1) An XDialog box to prompt for date_begin and date_end. It's a bit intimidating at first to do this, but once you figure it out, you'll be far more powerful. The genie to build the XDialog will give you the choice to make the variables local, session or global. Choose global.

(Action 2) Print/preview a report. As you go through this genie, you can specify a filter expression for the report, rather than ask at print time. The filter builder part of this will give you the opportunity to choose the date range, using the global variables.

If this becomes too difficult to figure out, come back here and say so. It's really quite simple in the end, and I'm thinking a little video might be in order.

            Hi Steve
I wondered if there was a video

on placing a link to a report,
            from a grid detail area,
with the start date and end date calender text boxes.

I can see this is possible from a tabbed UI but cant see how to do this from under the grid detail area.
            Thanks
            John
