Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Field as Phone Number

    Many moons ago, I'm sure you could set a field as a Phone number and you could press a button with a Telephone image which would dial the number.

    Maybe this should be in the Wish List section, a field that could have the Control type set as Phone.

        Re: Field as Phone Number

        Don't think there ever was a Phone field type.

        FWIW: For anyone reading this, here's an idea for working with phone numbers. Instead of using a mask, I use my own Phone_dash() function to convert any phone number entered to a phone number with dashes. It's simple to create. I just do a remspecial() of the number entered then stuff dashes into the correct locations. I also remove any leading "1". Of course, others may prefer a different format than what I use - especially if you live in a different country.

        The advantage of this is that (1) it doesn't matter if the user types 234-567-8989 or 1-234-567-8989 or 1-(234)-567-8989 or, as they are more likely to start doing, 2345678989 and (2) even more important, I can prompt for input for a Find function and use Phone_dash() to convert whatever the user enters to make sure the result matches the actual data.

        phone_nov = ui_get_text( "FIND", "Please enter the number to find." )
        phone_nov = phone_dash( phone_nov )
        parentform.find( phone_nov )

        Now, even if the user cuts and pastes a number from, say, an e-mail where the number was shown as (234) 567-8989, it will still be converted to the correct format for the Find operation.

        In the table, simply add this to the CanWrite field event:
        A_field_value = phone_dash( A_field_value )

        DISCLAIMER: Sometimes the A_field_value needs to be A_field_value.value but I've never figured out how to tell exactly when it needs to be done that way so I just use trial and error. It also seems to vary with the version of A5 you happen to be using. Since I'm still using v7, 8, and 9, it's hard to remember what works where.

          Re: Field as Phone Number

          You can drop a field containing a phone number on a form, dial the number from the tool bar(Ctrl-T while focus is on the field) or make a button that dials the phone(your choice of fields) number (Fields, Dial)

          You can also put that code on a custom tool bar if you wish.

          If you just want the field to show like a phone number, it can be done in field rules and you can make your own if not supplied like you want.
