Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multi_select Records Errors

    I have finally got the multi select dialog box to work the way I want, but now that I have the information I am having trouble doing anything with it. I get to the point that it lists the records I selected, but then it get to a point in the code (some I copied from numerous message board posts) and errors out.
    What I am trying to do is change a field in each record that is selected - then I can run the report if that field is .t. - then change back to .f. so it can be reused.
    dim count as n
    count = line_count(v_devel1)

    dim tract as c
    dim count as n
    dim i as n
    count = line_count(v_devel1)
    ui_msg_box("just for test",alltrim(str(count))+" Tracts were selected and their Tract are"+ crlf()+v_devel1)'just for testing
    if count>0 then
    'loop over each tract in the list that is returned
    dim t as p
    t = table.open("tractinfo")
    t.index_primary_put("Tract_No")

    for i = 1 to count
    'extract the "i" th word in the list
    tract = word(v_devel1,i,crlf())
    Trace.WriteLn(tract)'Still testing
    t.fetch_find (v_devel1) *** I get the error on this line of conflicting expression data types. t.change_begin(.t.)
    multi_select = .t.
    t.solvent = .f.
    t.change_end(.t.)
    next
    t.close()
    end if

    I have tried to change it numerous ways and still get same error - hard to find anything on doing something with the data - list that is created

    Re: Multi_select Records Errors

    Code:
    t.fetch_find(v_devel1) *** I get the error on this line of conflicting expression data types.
    This tells Alpha to search all the Tract_no fields in your table to see if any match the entire list (v_devel1). I think you want to search all the Tract_no fields for the current "Tract", like this:

    Code:
    t.fetch_find(Tract)
    You are getting the error message because the list (v_devel1) includes non-alphanumeric characters, namely crlf() pairs. Your table field is character data and cannot contain non-alphanumeric characters.

    ps - your code will be much easier to read if you format it and then surround it with CODE tags supplied by the message board.

      Re: Multi_select Records Errors

      my tract_no is a numeric field as is rec_no - I really need it to search on v_proj_no .and. tract_no or by rec_no - not sure how to convert this??

        Re: Multi_select Records Errors

        Ok. That detail was well hidden. In your script you set the index to "Tract_no" and then tried to do a find by key (t.fetch_find()) Since Tract_no did not seem to involve arithemetic I assumed it was like a phone number or an id number... i.e. a character string. I guessed wrong. Now you're talking about doing the find by key on a combination of fields (v_proj_no and tract_no). I'm confused and can't help without having complete information. How about posting sample data with a copy of your application so we can see all the details?
