Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Microsoft Word

    Hello

I've noticed with V7 V8 V9 than when you first merge with Word, the loading time of the doc is painfully slow.

The subsequent times it loads faster but is still a tad slow doing so.

Is it me or has anyone else experienced this?

    Kind regards

    Re: Microsoft Word

    Hi Alex,

    I can confirm your findings.

The first time I called Word it took about 35 seconds to open. After that, it seems that the link is held in memory as it was almost instant to open again.

I wonder if this is something that can be improved upon?

      Alex

How much memory do you have on that computer?

I have an HP laptop with 2 gb (up to 3.5 gb for 32 bit machines) and while it's slower than I'd like, it's a lot faster than another machine with 512mb of memory..

I'm at the point now of recommending at least 2 gb for XP. Memory is way too cheap to wait for processes.

Heck I can buy memory boards for less than some good cigars. And life is way too short to smoke cheap cigars.

        Re: Microsoft Word

The machine has 1 gig so I'll try upgrading it.

In passing our minimun recommended spec to clients is a 2gig workstaion and if over 4 workstations, a server with 4 gig of ram.

And to think I can remember the day when you could do automatic letter writing with a 32K mag card!!

Thanks both Keith and Al for your prompt replies.

          Re: Microsoft Word

I have 4 gig on my machine. The first open takes about 30 seconds - subsequent openings are almost instantaneous. Apparently the amount of computer memory is not the issue.

            Re: Microsoft Word

Perhaps someone from Alpha would like to comment on their experience of loading Word and merging a record?

From Nick's comments it would appear it is not ram.

There is a delay when merging with Outlook.

I use a number of other products (Maximizer CRM, Datafile accounts) which merge with Outlook and Word and I don't experience the same delays with them.

Secondly is this delay only at desktop.

What happens when you want to merge with Word when you are running a web database?

            Many thanks
